Erap Estrada Runs Again for Office

The Philippine Constitution clearly states that the President is not allowed of any re-election, and that can be found on Article VII, Section 4. I quote:

Article VII, Section 4. The President and the Vice-President shall be elected by direct vote of the people for a direct term of six (6) years which shall begin at noon on the thirtieth day of June next following the day of the election and shall end at noon of the same date, six years thereafter. The President shall not be eligible for re-election. No person who has succeeded as President and has served as such for more than four years shall be qualified for election to the same office at any time.

The news about former President Erap Estrada, who has been convicted and labeled as a corrupt public official, expressing his desire to run again as President of the country this upcoming election on 2010 has been grazing our boob tube for over a month now. The Constitution prohibits this kind of re-election. The disheartening part is, the Commission on Election (COMELEC) already expressed that they have no choice but to accept his candidacy when he files it this November. COMELEC acknowledges the ruling that any natural-born Filipino citizen should not be deprived of candidacy. However, there is another constitution saying that re-election is prohibited, so obviously the former ruling is disregarded already. COMELEC says they will only peruse on this case once a second party opposes the candidacy, but since, according to them, there is no one yet, Erap's filing will be accepted.

Now this is just a proof how moronic some people could get. Why wait for someone to oppose when you actually have the Constitution to back you up? What's the constitution for if it will not be adhered to?

What's your say on this?
