Erectile dysfunction is a common, yet very misunderstood diagnose that can cause much embarrassment. Relationships suffer when sex becomes an issue and this can be needless because there are many medications that can help a couple resolve their sexual problems. Knowing the facts before you consult a doctor will make it easier to talk about the problem and have a proper medication prescribed. The following information is not intended to endorse drugs or recommend therapy.

The first drug to address erectile dysfunction was Viagra, and many a sexual relationship was probably saved because of it. It is sildenafil citrate and is also sold as Revatio and other trade names. It acts by inhibiting cGMP specific phosphodiesterase type 5, an enzyme that regulates blood flow in the penis. It works within a few hours of taking it and the effects last 12- 16 hours. Erections are reported to be very good with increased stamina. For men with erectile dysfunction (ED), a harder erection can lead to a more satisfying sexual experience. Many people who take Viagra notice a change in the way they see green and blue colors, or they see the world with a bluish tinge for several hours.

The chief competitors for Viagra are Cialis and Levitra. Cialis is tadafil which relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body. It is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. It works by helping to increase blood flow into the penis during sexual stimulation. This helps a man to achieve and maintain an erection. Common side effects are headaches and muscle aches. Men report that they can take Cialis twice a week and enjoy sexual relations at any time. Erections are not as hard as they are with Viagra.

Like Viagra, Levitra only stays in the bloodstream for a few hours and is taken about one hour before intended sexual intercourse. It is vardenafil and works similarly to Viagra and Cialis by increase blood flow to the penis. The most common side effect with Levitra is nausea. It is generally prescribed if Viagra is not working for a patient.

All three of these options are pills prescribed by a licensed physician. They are not cures for ED, but rather a way to help blood flow to the penis. They do not act as an aphrodisiac and are not instant; you need sexual stimulation for them to work. It is very important to remember that these are intended as treatment for ED and are not birth control, nor will they protect against sexually transmitted disease. Always consult a doctor before using any medication. Do not take any of these medications if you are also using a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems.
