I am a big fan of barbershops, and for those who think a barbershop is Super Cuts or Fantastic Sam's, please think again. Growing up I disliked these "get them in and out" shops and often found myself with bad haircut after bad haircut, especially because I am extra picky about my hair.

If you are ever in Pearl City on the island of Oahu, I would suggest stopping in at my local barbershop. I highly recommend this shop as I have been to over a dozen and this is the one that I like to come back to, not only for quality of the cut but the great customer service.

The shop is called "Ernesto and Gloria's Barbershop." It has become one of my favorite hangouts over the past few years. I remember going in there as a kid with my Dad to get a haircut and now I take my son there. It sits in the same location it has for years across from the Pearl City division of the Honolulu Police Department.

The reason I love this shop is because it is what I like to call "man grooming." Why should women get all the fun? My barber always remembers the kind of cut that I like and I never have to remind him. He cuts it just like I like it each time. He calls me by my first name when I see him which is a big plus in my book, my previous barber I saw for almost a year every two weeks and he still never remembered my name.

First he cuts my hair and we talk about everything from current events to the weather. He then uses shaving cream and a razor to clean up the edges. He also shaves the little area on my upper back that he calls my werewolf fur. Try having them do that at Super Cuts. He then puts on after-shave to freshen up the shaved area. The next thing he uses is one of my favorites; it is like a head vacuum. He does this so no hairs fall on your shirt or in your car in case you plan on going anywhere afterwards. And here is my most favorite part. He has a back massager that he uses on my shoulders after each cut. Not bad for 12 bucks huh? I usually tip him very well as I love the half hour of pampering.

The other thing is he is always prepared for my rambunctious son and has lollipops, candy canes or other activities to keep him busy while he waits for me to get a haircut. On holidays he does special things like hands out free gel, pens and calendars. That is something I would never expect from any other shop. And he has a heart of gold as he tried to help out customers if they are in need.

There are many barbers and stylists there and they vary for each person. I believe your barber should suit your personality and mine does it to a tee. Many a time I have called him at the last minute for a cut because of a dinner I had to attend and he stayed later than usual. Oh and by the way, his name is Steve. If you are ever in there, he will do a great job and you may get to see some of his Elvis Memorabilia as he is a huge Elvis fan and a part time Elvis impersonator. If you need a cut, check them out across the HPD station and next to the McDonald's in Pearl City, I promise you will love it.
