Erykah Badu Guilty of Disorderly Conduct for Naked Video

The Singer Has Paid a $500 Fine and Will Serve 6 Months Probation

Back in April I reported that Erykah Badu was being charged with disorderly conduct in Dallas, Texas for appearing naked in her "Window Seat" video. The court has convicted Badu of the charges and the singer now faces 6 months probation in addition to the $500 fine she already paid.

The nude video shoot took place in downtown Dealy Plaza in the singers hometown of Dallas, TX. The plaza is best known for being the location of the JFK assassination in 1963. According to Reuters, Badu agreed with the prosecutors of the case and said she would serve out her probation until February 11th, 2011.

"Window Seat", the song that started this controversy, can be found on Erykah Badu's latest album "New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)". Badu may face charges other than the disorderly conduct she was convicted of because of walking the grassy knoll in her skin. The production company of the film, whom Badu hired, is accused of making a "guerilla film". Dallas officials claimed that the proper permits for Badu's stunt (her being naked) were not obtained. It is unclear whether the city will charge Badu or Creative Control (the production company).

One of the most poignant lines Badu sing-speaks comes after she is shot in the head and lies naked on the road with blue ink oozing out of her head into the word "groupthink", "They play it safe, are quick to assassinate what they do not understand. They move in packs, ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another. They feel most comfortable in groups, less guilt to swallow. They are us. This is what we have become, afraid to respect the individual. A single person within her circumstance can move onto change, to love herself, to evolve."

Badu appeared on The Wanda Sykes Show to clear the air over the accusations that she was insulting JFK's memory, "My point was grossly misunderstood all over America. JFK is one of my heroes, one of the nation's heroes. John F. Kennedy was a revolutionary; he was not afraid to butt heads with America, and I was not afraid to show America my butt-naked truth."

Initially, Badu plead "not guilty" to the charges. It is unclear what made the singer change her mind and brand herself guilty by paying the maximum fine and serving her probation.

Very well-written Linda. One point: Erykah didn't "decide" to pay the $500 fine. She may have decided to own up to her actions by pleading guilty, which is the right thing to do, since it was her naked butt there. :-) But fines are mandated by the court...you don't choose to pay them or not if they are court ordered. Great job, otherwise. I agree with Charlotte, it is sad when they act out...not intentionally trying to defame his name, but doing so nonetheless.

Sad when celebrities feel the need to act up.
