As its name says it, Dixon Lake is mostly well known for its large body of water. The lake is also open to all (except for swimmers) but a fishing fee is required to anyone who wants to fish. Though small, it's been known that huge fishes have been caught. The lake is also home to many ducks that are very fond of guests and love being fed by them.
Fishes and ducks aren't the only animals you will encounter in this park. Small animal such as rabbits and squirrels are often seen running around. Beware, however, as there are warnings to be careful of snakes.
Camping is a favorite activity of many locals and the camping fee is very little (though a reservation is required prior to camping). Another popular activity that's run by the park is their boating trips. Though small, one has the option of renting either a motor or paddle boat. Children are welcome and safety gear is provided with the rental fee.
Another feature this park includes is their picnic area. There are many large trees everywhere which is why some people prefer picnicking on the grass. If you are hosting a larger picnic, however, there are tables and sheltered tables (which can too be reserved considering busy weekends). They all come with their own grill and the park rangers are nice about picking up the trash every few hours or so.
Speaking of park rangers, there are some rules that you need to follow. Parking, for example, is free only during weekdays. The fee applies during weekends and there is a greater fee for bigger cars and vans. Pets, unfortunately, are also not allowed. Another important restriction is the use of alcohol. And again, there is no swimming or wading in the lake. And as for all parks, you should clean as much as you can after yourself (the rangers will take care of throwing away large piles of trash).
Dixon Lake also hosts events such as the annual trout derby. The trout derby is a large event in which people of all ages try to catch the largest fish. This is a four day event and rewards are given out!
Dixon Lake also has various hiking trails, but again, beware of snakes.
The best part of this park is that it's away from the rest of the city and a nice getaway from the stresses of life.
Dixon Lake is located on:
1700 North La Honda Drive
Escondido, CA 92027
And is open every day
