Unit of Study - Grammar (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Compound Words)
Content Area - ESL (English as a Second Language)
Grade Level - Advanced Middle School 6-8
Length of Lesson - 42 - 60 minutes
Behavioral Objective - The students will be able to create a collage using pictures of nouns, adjectives, verbs, and compound words cut out from newspapers and magazines.
Aim - What is a noun? What is a verb? What is an adjective? What is a compound word?

Motivational Activity - I will have created my own collage reflecting nouns, adjectives, verbs, and compound words cut out from newspapers and magazines. We will go through each picture and correctly label them

Materials - glue, scissors, magazines, newspapers, poster board, pen, pencil, writing paper

Procedure -
1. First I will do my motivational activity.
2. Next I will ask the students if they what a collage is and if they have ever created one before. I will tell the students that a collage is a collection of items taken from different places and put together to create an art form.
3. Then I will ask the students if they what a noun, a verb, an adjective, and a compound word are. I will go over with the class the meaning of each one. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. A verb shows action. An adjective describes a noun. A compound word is a word made from two different words to make one word.
4. I will ask the students to write down two to three examples of each one.
5. I will now explain the class activity for the day.
6. The students will have the opportunity to look through the magazines and the newspapers to search for pictures. These pictures will be showing nouns, verbs, adjectives, and compound words. The pictures must be labeled.
7. I will break the class up into groups.
8. One student will do the cutting, the gluing, the searching, etc...
9. I will walk around the room to monitor each group's progress. I will provide praise and support where needed.
10. After the collage is complete, the groups will be given a chance to share their collage with the rest of the class.
11. Each group will make sure their work area is cleaned up.
12. I will then sum up the lesson by asking the question, "What have we learned today?"

Follow up- For a writing activity the students will describe the pictures they chose for their collages. They will label the noun, verb, adjective, and compound word in each sentence.

Homework - The students will write ten sentences using nouns, verbs, adjectives, and compound words. Each sentence must be labeled correctly. or extra credit they can draw a picture to go with each sentence.

Vocabulary - noun, verb, adjective, compound word, person, place, thing, idea, action, collage

Assessment - I will review each collage to make sure the pictures are correctly labeled. I will hang the collages around the room for others to see.
