Essay Contest to Win a Dream House in Hawaii

Amber S.
In our failing economy, it's nearly as difficult to obtain a home as it is to sell one. Many are finding it nearly impossible to achieve the American Dream. It's so difficult to sell a high-priced, quality home in a real estate market that is barely scraping by, but John Williams and his family of Pahoa, Hawaii have found a way to do just that.

John was unable to sell his brand-new custom-built Hawaiian home, so he decided to try thinking a little outside the box. He has obtained legal help in starting an Essay contest where the winner of the grand prize will be awarded this beautiful home. The contest is entirely legal and John hopes that others who are unable to sell their homes will be able to use his idea.

This beautiful home, known as "The Sweetheart Cottage" or "The Gingerbread House" has many beautiful fine details all lovingly done by hand. These include heart cutouts on the porch railings, custom moldings, stained glass, and unique cabinet knobs. The house has lovely marble floors throughout and even a cupola.

The home is brand new and has never been lived in. It has all new energy-efficient appliances, an enormous garage and workshop, and is located in a beautiful tropical Hawaiian forest on an 8,000 square foot parcel of land.

Winning a gorgeous house (valued at around $460,000) in your own Hawaiian paradise isn't all the contest affords. A second and third place winner will also be chosen and cash prizes will be awarded. The owner is donating $30,000 in proceeds from the contest to the local area schools. The contest is both a way for the owner to sell his home and also for someone who may not otherwise be able to afford a home, to have one.

Interested in entering the contest? All you have to do is write an essay in 101 words or less about what "aloha" or "mahalo" (thank you) mean to you. This is a contest of skill based on the writer's ability to use proper grammar and punctuation, creativity, and also persuasive abilities. Send in your entry with an entry fee of only $101 before August 11, 2009. The owner of the home is only accepting 6,000 entries, so hurry before all spots are taken!

The contest has been featured on local area news as well as various real estate websites. For more information, rules, photos of this gorgeous home, and details on the contest, visit the website at winhawaiianhome.com.

Unfortunately, they did not get enough entries for the contest. Only a few hundred people entered. I did get my money back, however. I sure would have liked to have won the house, but getting a refund is better than not getting anything at all, I guess :)

Years ago, I entered a contest like this once. And I wrote a very intriguing and unique entry. The people decided to keep their house, though, and returned my $100. Now I'm wondering if it was because they were looking for unique ideas of their own to enter contests for other homes and they used all of the best ideas for their entry. Did you find out who won this contest?

For folks that live in the northeast, and are tired of the cold, shoveling snow and high oil bills, winning this contest would be our escape to Paradise! And the odds of winning are so much greater than that of a state lottery, and being a skill contest, I even have the opportunity to slightly turn those odds in my favor. Heck yes, I'm going to enter!

What a cool thing to do...heard about this on the news. $150 entry fee I can't justify...which sucks :-( Should net them about 9000,000 if they get a fulll 6,000 entrants! Thanks :-) I mean, Mahalo ;)
