Essay Testing: Tips for Studying

Beth Lytle
For many students, essay questions are a living nightmare. It doesn't come easy for everyone and students can really struggle with this. What's important to understand is the fact that the way you write out your answer will often be about as important as the answer given.

The first step is to pay attention and read carefully. Read through the question several times, if necessary. Make sure you have a clear understanding of the question in order to form your answer. Be specific. If the essay question is asking for a specific number of details, break down your answer this way. Make sure you answer the question fully.

Use your scrap paper to not only take notes, but to organize your thoughts. This is extremely important to do before you begin writing in the actual answer. After you have completely taken notes and written a general (but quick) outline, write out your answer (it never hurts to write out the answer on a different piece of paper if you have the space, before transferring to the essay sheet). Write your answer in and read through the answer carefully. In fact, you're going to want to read through all of your answers a second time once you have completed all of the essay questions.

If sample essay questions are available, be sure to request these types of tests before you begin the actual essay test. This will give you an idea of what to expect and allow you to practice. It's also a good idea to join a study group or to partner up with another student so you two can test each other.
