Being prepared for the elements is an essential part of planning an enjoyable and memorable camping trip with your family. When packing, be sure to take into consideration the location where you are going and the season you are going to be camping.

Pack A Camping Survival Kit

A camping survival kit is essential to bring with you on any outing to the great outdoors. The kit can be compact in size to easily fit in a day pack and should contain a first-aid kit, flashlight, and waterproof bag for placing essential items such as your driver's license, credit cards, emergency phone numbers and other vital information. Your camping survival kit should also contain a compass and map of the area, fire starter or waterproof matches, multi-tool or knife, emergency blanket, survival food, extra clothes in waterproof bag, whistle and nylon cord, adhesive tape and a cell phone with the battery fully charged.

Basic Camping Supplies

After packing your camping survival kit, there are several basic items that you should pack along for your camping trip. The basic camping essentials include a tent, sleeping bag, pillow, waterproof tarp, waterproof ground cloth, lantern, axe or camp saw, shovel, rain gear and appropriate clothing to withstand the elements and changing weather. Wear hiking boots or shoes appropriate for long-days on your feet and pack an extra pair of shoes in case they get wet.

To keep family members comfortable, pack along a compact toiletry bag filled with toilet paper, toothbrush, biodegradable soap, medicine, and undergarments for each day of the trip. To keep the sun and bugs away don't forget to pack along sunscreen and bug spray.

If you plan to fish during your camping trip, don't forget your fishing pole, tackle box and license where required.

Camping - Food and Water Supplies

Another essential part of camping is eating food prepared in the great outdoors. Before leaving for your trip try to put together a complete menu plan for each day you will be camping. Purchase all necessary ingredients and pack them accordingly. Pack a camping stove and necessary fuel, coolers and food storage containers, cooking and eating utensils including at least one sharp knife, spoon and several forks, can opener, and cleaning supplies for cleaning dishes. And don't forget the marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers.

Bring along enough water for your trip and include smaller water bottles for day hikes and water purification tablets for purifying water if you will be in a remote location.

Capture Camping Memories

Be sure to capture camping memories by bringing along a camera, notebook and pen or pencil to write a journal about the highlights of the camping vacation. Have the kids brings along their own digital or disposal camera to take pictures to create their own scrapbook when they return home. To keep boredom from setting in, bring along a good book or other distractions such as cards or board games to keep children entertained after a day full of fishing or hiking.

Camping when planned and organized properly can provide a wonderful way for families to spend time together as they enjoy the wonders of the outdoors.

Nice article. Quite a different focus though than the one I just put up on solo backpacking.
