Essential Gardening Tools and Equipment

Taking a walk through a gardening store can be a little overwhelming when you're looking for gardening equipment and tools. There are many tools that would come in handy, but are not necessarily needed to have a successful garden. Here are a few items that will be very useful when controlling weeds, watering the garden, and planning your garden.

You will first need to purchase or rent a rotary tiller. Rotary tillers come in an array of sizes. A wider rotary tiller can be used to cultivate the soil in the spring or fall to prepare your garden for planting. A smaller rotary tiller can be used in the garden during the growing season. The narrow tines make it easier to maneuver around plants and between rows. You can find rotary tillers that run off of gas or electricity. Many rotary tillers are being made now to operate with only one hand. A hoe is also a great tool that can be used when the weeds just start to grow. Take your time to go in between the plants and loosen the soil. Make sure to do this carefully so you don't damage the roots of your plants.

A must for gardening is water access. Using a hose is the simplest way to water your garden. A sprinkler or watering wand can be attached to the end of the hose to create a rain effect. If you do not have the time to water your garden by hand you can use a soaker hose. A soaker hose waters deep to the roots of the plants preventing evaporation. Put the soaker hose along the rows of your plants and let the water do the work. You can also install a drip irrigation system. These systems are set on a timer so you do not have to remember to turn the water on and off. Ask at your local nursery for more information.

Wheelbarrows or garden carts are very useful. You will need a wheelbarrow to haul soil, fertilizer, or anything that is heavy. Hand tools can be stored in your garden cart. Hand tools include shovels, spades, forks, hoes, rakes and trowels. These hand tools can be used in areas where a rotary tiller can not reach. You will want to put them in your garden cart for easy access.

A fence around the garden and cages around plants are needed to keep animals out of your plants. These are tools that you will not regret using. Spend the extra money and your garden will be a success.

The internet is a wonderful tool to help with the planning and up keeping of your garden. You can do research on what plants can grow in your region, how to grow certain plants, how to organize your garden, and anything about gardening. Many gardening website have message boards that you can post questions or concerns that you might have. It's a great way to get the information that you need for growing your garden.
