Essential Hiking Gear for Children: Boots, Clothing, and Fun Items

Quality Gear Will Enhance Your Child's Experience with the Great Outdoors

Hiking is the best recreation activity to instill a love of the great outdoors in your child. As an outdoor sport, hiking is a flexible activity that you can begin at any fitness or income level. Hiking trails are available in both urban and rural settings over varying terrain. However, to make the most of a hiking trip, whether it is for an hour or a weekend, you need to pack some essential gear for your children.

By purchasing quality hiking gear, your child will be more comfortable. You can use hiking gear as a forum for teaching your child about outdoor preparedness and safety. Throw in sunscreen and some fun items, described later in this article, and your family is set for a great outdoor adventure!

Essential Hiking Gear for Children: Footwear

Quality footwear is the foundation of a successful hiking experience. No one enjoys blisters, cracked heels, or sore toes. Your child will not grow to love hiking if he or she is wearing ill-fitting shoes.

For young children, ages 2-5, you do not need to spend a large amount of money on hiking boots. In most cases, children in this age group can start with small nature hikes on level terrain. A good quality pair of athletic shoes will suffice. Children in this age typically will hike only small distances so be sure to hike at their pace to make the outdoor adventure fun.

For older children, you may want to consider going to outdoor store to be fitted with a pair of hiking boots. If you plan on longer hikes, a good pair of boots is essential. You can find quality children's hiking boots in the $40 to $70 range. Check out REI for some hiking boot ideas and be sure to shop sales if you need to save money.

Consider terrain for footwear. If you like to do river walks, invest in a good pair of closed-toe water sandals.

Essential Hiking Gear for Children: Clothing

As with adults, dress children in layers for hiking. Since young children do not sweat like older children and adults, you do not need to invest in high tech fabrics and specialty clothing. Dress your child with a t-shirt at the base and then add layers as appropriate such as a fleece layer for warmth and a waterproof jacket.

Purchase a bucket hat. Your child will be hiking in the sun at some point and you want to keep his or her face, neck, and shoulders protected. Look for a hat with built-in SPF protection. A good quality hiking hat will last your child for several seasons.

Pack an extra set of clothing for children when hiking. Older children can pack their own extra gear in a small daypack. If your child gets soaked while hiking, you need a backup set of clothing including socks, underwear, pants, and a top to prevent your child from becoming chilled.

Essential Hiking Gear for Children: Fun Items

Hiking is fun. Shopping for hiking gear may not be as much fun for your child. Let your child participate in the process by picking out some fun gear. For example, sunglasses are essential but can be fun so let your children pick out their own pair.

Child-size binoculars are fun but also serve an educational purpose. When hiking, teach your child to use the binoculars to spot birds, other critters, or natural formations.

Pack a notebook and a pencil. Take a break during your hike and create a nature sketch. This break will help your child rest while really looking at and appreciating nature up close and personnel.

Enjoy the great outdoors while hiking with your child, and you will instill a life-long love of nature!
