* Always keep all exterior doors on your home, which includes the doors to any outbuildings and garages, locked. Even if you consider your neighborhood to be a safe area, you don't know when burglars may decide to target your particular area.
* Your front door should have a peep hole which allows you to see who is on the outside of the door before you open it.
* All of your exterior doors should have chains installed on them. This way you can open the door partially and sign for mail and packages.
* Don't hide spare house keys outside the house like under flowerpots or door mats. Thieves know about all the common hiding places. One option if you don't like carrying keys it to buy a thumbprint or keypad door lock for your front door.
* Be sure to test your burglar alarms and home security system on a frequent basis. Make certain that all of your family members understand how these systems operate and how what they should do if an alarm goes off.
* Keep all of your bushes, shrubs, trees and other forms of foiled trimmed back from the side of your house and all windows, doors and the chimney. Overgrown foliage provides a hiding place for burglars.
* You should never depend on a watch dog as your sole means of home security. You might have a large family dog that is very protective, but that is not a guarantee that your dog will be able to do anything to stop burglars from breaking into your house and robbing you or causing other forms of damage.
* When you are away on vacation, have your newspapers and mail delivery stopped or have a neighborhood pick them up for you. If they pile up outside, it is a clear indicator that you are away from home and it makes your house quite an easy target for intruders.
* It's a good idea to get to know your neighbors if at all possible. Another thing you can do to help make your neighborhood safer is to help establish a neighborhood watch.
* Your children should be instructed to not offer any type of personal information to strangers on the phone.
* Establish a household emergency plan for your home. Assign a meeting place ahead of time where everyone should meet if there is an emergency. Be certain that all members of the household know how to operate the fire extinguishers, home security system, and know who to contact if there is a theft, fire or other type of emergency.
These are some of the precautions and steps you can take to help keep your family and house more secure. You can also consider other types of security measures such as a home security system, but start with the basics first.
