Umbrella.
You know how you guys are always singing Umbrella, ella, ella, ella? Well how come none of you has one? Why would you not bring an umbrella to school? Even if you forgot one or don't have one, buy one. This is one of the most essential items a college student needs, as most of you that live on campus won't be driving a car to and from class. And on rainy, days, you can bet that the bus will be full. So if you need to get to class and you need to get to class on time, take your umbrella. It doesn't matter if you look stupid and your umbrella is covered in flowers - you're safe from getting sick. So many students walk around with nothing but their clothes on, and it's pouring rain. Why would you do that? I guess I'll be baffled by this until someone tells me the answer. But until that happens, I will always look down upon any student who doesn't carry an umbrella when it's raining. Raincoats are okay as well.
Alarm Clock/Device to tell time.
If you rely on your desktop to tell time, then you should get your life together. Life isn't meant to be spent in front of a computer. Besides a desktop, a college student should always have an alarm clock. College is hard, and your schedule will be hectic, meaning you probably won't wake up every single morning recharged and refreshed, ready to take on the day. Having an alarm clock gets you up when you need to be up, so that you don't miss the next midterm which is going to cost you 30% of your grade. A lot of students just don't have one, and they tell me that they rely on their cell phones to tell time. What if your battery dies? Time. It's the 4th dimension. Keep track of it.
Pencil.
Okay, so now you've made it to class, but you have nothing to WRITE WITH? How do you expect to learn the information? Unless you have a computer around (which I don't suggest brining to class), you're either going to 1) listen to the lecture and forget everything by the time you get back to your dorm, or 2) cut your finger open and write with blood. I'm guessing most of you will choose the latter. In any case, make sure you have a plethora of writing utensils at your fingertips. You never know when a cute girl will ask for one.
Shoes.
It has occurred to me that over the past few years, many people of the younger generation have decided to wear sandals (flip flops if you will) on a daily basis. May I ask why? I don't really think they are a fashion statement, and I don't think that they really serve any purpose. Your feet get dirty, and they end up smelling. It's okay to wear them once in a while when you want a change of scenery, but do any of you have shoes? In some cultures, wearing flip flops is looked down upon, as it is not a sign of wealth and prosperity. So please, the next time I see someone wearing flip flops on a rainy day or during the winter, I'm going to laugh at them. Point and laugh.
Coats/Jackets/Long sleeve shirts/warm clothing.
If you walk around on a college campus during winter, you are sure to see at least 15 people wearing shorts. And t-shirts. It is rather baffling to me that with all of this information at our fingertips (namely the internet), that someone could not check a weather website before they head out the door. Even if you DON'T check the temperature, at least know that the weather is getting colder, and you need to dress warmly. Do you know what staying cold entails? As you get older, the damage you did to your body by not keeping yourself will start to show. Your joints will start to ache, your blood vessels brittle easily, and you get sick easier. I'm sure the select few who wear t-shirts in 5 degree weather have warmer clothes, but I just don't know why they don't wear them.
These are just some of the things that a few college students do to annoy me. I know they do it just for me, because some of them walked up to me and said, "I am intentionally acting stupid so that you will be angry." Overall, most of the students hitting their young adult years are smart enough to start taking care of themselves, but I will never understand those who don't. And I know they're not dumb.
