Essential Kitchen Appliances for the Raw Foodist

Megan Butler
The right kitchen appliances are essential for the raw foodist. I have been a raw foodie for over a decade. During that time, I've learned that kitchen appliances are the keys to keeping a raw food diet from feeling too restricted. If you've made the decision to be a raw foodist, here are the kitchen appliances that you will need to make the most out of your meals.

Blender

Smoothies are an essential element of my raw food diet. I make smoothies for my family nearly every morning with seasonal fruits.

Juicer

Most prepackaged juices, while technically raw, contain added preservatives, coloring and sugar. Raw foodists must maximize the nutritional value of all their foods. Therefore, a juicer that processes the skin as well as the meat of your favorite fruits and vegetables is essential for a healthy raw food diet.

Dehydrator

Dehydrated food is technically altered and doesn't follow the strictest rules of a raw food diet. However, dehydrated foods are so important to adding variety and garnish to your food that often, even the strictest raw foodists let them sneak into their diets on occasion.

Knives

Not all knives are created equal. High quality knives are essential kitchen appliances for the raw foodist. They make cutting vegetables quicker and easier which is a boon when you do it several times a day.

Sprouting Containers

Sprouted beans are an essential source of protein and nutrition for raw foodists. And for foods that important, a wet paper towel in a cool place just won't suffice. Furthermore, sprouters are too inexpensive to overlook.

Food Processor

Raw foodists do a lot of chopping. However, the right food processor can save you a lot of chopping labor. Invest in a versatile machine with many different blade settings and uses and you will shave hours off of your food prep time each week.

Mortar and Pestle

These guys make useful kitchen tools as well as great conversation pieces. Grinding certain types seeds and nuts is virtually impossible without a sturdy mortar and pestle. These are relatively easy to find and its hard to go wrong with a stone set.

Salad Spinner

This may seem like a non-essential kitchen appliance for a raw foodist. However, by spinning your leafy greens after washing and before refrigeration, you can keep them fresher longer. This can help save lots when leafy greens become an often purchased staple of your diet.

All of these items are best purchased online at sites that specifically cater to raw foodists like www.rawguru.com, and www.rawfoodplanet.com. While most of them are available at many kitchen appliance stores, raw food sites offer appliances that specifically cater to the needs of raw foodists.
