Essential Oils from Around the World

Origins and Personal Uses

Sighgu
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic plant compounds in liquid form. They're usually extracted by a distillation process. Their usage dates back to ancient times, when civilizations used them for medical and beauty purposes. It seems to be just recently that an interest in using essential oils as therapy has been rejuvenated. Thank goodness, for these oils have plenty to offer. Below are various ways that you can include some major essential oils in your life. Historical origins and uses are included as well.

As a first aid kit

Tea tree, originally from Australia, is antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral, so it's great for bug bites, infections and minor scrapes and wounds.

Clary sage comes from Russia and Oregon, and is great for inflammation as well as aiding in the healing of wounds.

Chamomile also originates from Oregon. It is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is a great antiseptic and bactericidal.

Citronella, from Sri Lanka, is great as an insect repellant, so dilute it with witch hazel for a homemade "bug off".

As Skincare

Tea tree oil appears once again as a great multipurpose oil. In this case, it is great for acne and blemished conditions. Be sure to dilute it in a carrier oil, such as jojoba or coconut oil, and apply sparingly. Otherwise, you risk irritating sensitive skin.

Lavender, from Bulgaria and France and mountainous zones of the Mediterranean, is a lovely floral oil. It is both antibacterial and antiviral, making it popular for acne and problem-some complexions.

Lemongrass, originally from Guatemala and other tropical climates, is an antiseptic and is helpful for oily skin.

Cedarwood, from Morocco, is an astringent, antifungal and antiseptic. It was used as part of a cleansing ritual after dead bodies were handled and also for embalming. It's great for skin disorders like acne or psoriasis.

As Aromatherapy

Rosemary, originating in Tunisia and Spain, is great for enhancing memory and concentration. It's great for the fatigued and those who feel "burned out."

Bergamot, Mandarin and Lemon all hail from glorious Italy. All have uplifting, invigorating and brightening properties. These citrus oils are great for clearing the mind.

Cinnamon, from Sri Lanka, India and Madagascar, is considered an aphrodisiac. It dates back to Biblical times as being a component of holy anointing oil. It was also used by the ancient Chinese to treat various health problems.

The scent of Lavender has been used with much success for insomnia, anxiety and depression. It has been proven to slow down the nervous system and to lift moods.

These are just a few of their uses. And there are so many more essential oils out there. Stay tuned for another segment in "Essential Oils", as I delve deeper into their historical and cultural significance, and how you can support your immune system and enjoy better physical and mental health through their usage.
