Essential Oils and Epilepsy

People who suffer from epilepsy should be very careful when using essential oils. Some essential oils contain neurotoxins which can cause convulsions in people with epilepsy. Read on for more information on using essential oils with epilepsy.

Essential oils and Epilepsy - Convulsions

Some essential oils are known to cause convulsions in those with epilepsy and should always be avoided by individuals with this disorder. These essential oils include rosemary, fennel, sage and hyssop.

These are the most well known of the essential oils to avoid with epilepsy but there are others with compounds that could cause convulsions. When you have a disorder such as epilepsy, it's better to be safe than sorry. In this light, you should also avoid camphor, spike lavender, tansy and wormwood essential oils. All of these have the potential to cause convulsions in those suffering from epilepsy.

Essential oils and Epilepsy - Herbs and Essential Oils

Some herbs that can be used to treat epilepsy cannot be used in the form of essential oils. One such example is hyssop. This herb is used extensively to treat epilepsy but the essential oil should be avoided at all costs because of its ability to cause convulsions.

The reason for this is that essential oils are extremely concentrated forms of the plant material. As such, they are much stronger than the herb itself. So keep in mind that just because an herb is safe for you to use with epilepsy doesn't mean that the essential oil is safe for you. Always thoroughly research any essential oils you are not familiar with before using them.

Essential oils and Epilepsy - Family History

Anyone with epilepsy or a family history of epilepsy or seizures should not use the essential oils listed above in any form. Whether it be vaporizers, baths or massage, these essential oils can possibly be dangerous for those with epilepsy or a family history of the disorder.

It's a good idea to discuss the use of any alternative therapies with a professional health care provider, including aromatherapy and essential oils, if you have epilepsy. Your doctor will be able to help you decide if aromatherapy is safe for you.

All in all, you should be able to utilize the healing benefits of aromatherapy and essential oils even if you have epilepsy. As long as you avoid the essential oils that contain convulsant compounds, you should be fine. Just remember, if you are ever in doubt, talk it over with your doctor first.
