The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a professional fighting organization that pits top fighters of all different backgrounds and fighting styles against each other. Since there are very few rules in the UFC and any fighting style is allowed, fighters often display a wide array of different fighting styles. These are some of the most popular and essential fighting styles used in the UFC.
Muay Thai
Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, is a form of kickboxing that includes elbows and knees and is quite popular among UFC fighters because of its brutality and effectiveness. It is a stand-up fighting style and is good for engaging opponents in the start of a round before the fight goes to the mat.
Wrestling
Basic wrestling is another very popular fighting style used in the UFC. Many fights end up on the ground, and many fighters like to make this happen to avoid being punched or kicked. Wrestling gives fighters the basic skills they need to take down and pin their opponent. The skills one adopts from basic wrestling are essential to a UFC fighter.
Boxing
Traditional boxing is also popular among UFC fighters. Some fighters prefer to fight standing up and would rather knock out their opponent than grapple with them on the ground and go for a submission. It is often said that a well trained boxer can throw a harder punch than any other type of fighter. Like learning basic wrestling skills, learning proper boxing techniques are also essential to any fighter.
Brazilian Jujitsu
Brazilian jujitsu has become immensely popular in recent years, not just amongst UFC fighters but worldwide. Brazilian Jujitsu is the most effective style of grappling that can be used to lock opponents into chokes, arm bars and leg bars that will cause them to tap into submission while they are on the ground. It also has lots of good moves for escaping various chokes and holds, as well as some takedowns, punches and kicks.
