Establish a Healthy Study Session for Your Child

Holly Matheson
Students who have established healthy studying sessions at home or in the library are much more likely to do well in school and have higher grades as a result. Each student has his or her own way of studying and what works best for one person may not work so well for another. Some students may find that they have better results by using flash cards whereas others may fend better from taking and studying notes. Not only is it important to maintain high grades during school, but it will more importantly be infinitely beneficial to the student when looking at the long-term future.

By helping children to establish efficient studying sessions, parents can go a long way in helping their child to get the best quality from their education. There are times when students get frustrated with schooling and concepts that they do not yet understand. In these times it will be beneficial to the student to have practiced studying in the right environment. There will definitely be points in which the student simply does not feel like doing the necessary work and this is when the parent needs to step in and re-affirm the rules. In order for the child to be able to grasp the skills in which he or she is studying they will need to have a set schedule for studying and be able to firmly maintain this schedule. The key to achieving any goal is to practice. Parents should be sure to remind their children that in order to get past the point of frustration and incomprehension he or she will need to practice the concepts so that understanding of their studies will become much easier in the future.

The atmosphere that a student is in while studying can greatly impact the negative or positive outcomes of the session. Parents often find that their children will want to listen to music, watch television or do other various things while studying and doing homework. All of these things are distractions that will have negative impact on the quality of the child's study. Parents can ensure that their child gets the most out of this time by shutting off all surrounding electronics or games that could act as a distraction to the child. The more relaxed and quiet the study space is, the more the student will be able to understand of the work as opposed to a student that is listening to their ipod throughout every study session.

For parents who want to engage more with their child and help them study, setting aside a time each day in which the student can review the current chapter in the textbook and take key notes can be beneficial in helping the student study effectively. After the student has taken adequate notes of the subject, parents can engage themselves by quizzing their child and assisting in helping them to understand the skills.

The most important thing that any parent should keep in mind while helping their child to establish proper studying habits is that the older the child gets before he or she establishes these skills, the more difficult it will be to get their child into a healthy study routine. Practice makes perfect and looking at the big picture, both parent and child will be grateful in the future for healthy studying that is established early.
