Establishing a Grant

Many private and corporate foundations offer grants. A grant is an amount of money used for funding for specific causes in the community. As a foundation starting a grant, it is crucial to remember your mission as you pick a very specific area of interest from scientific research to advancements in education.

After you've decided the target area to which your grant will go, it's time to begin establishing you're grant. To establish a grant the first thing you need to do is establish whether or not your foundation can legally develop a grant program. If not, you will need to open a private foundation in order to do so. Once you have determined that you are legally fit to run a grant program, you need to go over your accounting and decide how much funding you would like to put toward your specific grant each year.

Determine what type of entity you plan on funding. You can provide funding for one person, a school, a hospital, etc. In order to find someone to give your money to, you need to create a grant application that is accessible and presented with clarity. The last step is establishing a review process. Will your board sort through applications and decide to whom the grant will go or will you use volunteers?

Take your time in all of these decisions. Where your grant money goes directly reflects on your foundation and it's mission. You can find more information, apply for a grant and go establish your own grant at grants.gov.
