Establishing a New Lawn: Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding: Your Best Choice?

Josh Mason
Hydroseeding is a method of seeding applied by a commercial hydroseeder to a new lawn or barren area. Also referred to as hydraulic mulch seeding, itcontains a mixture of mulch, fertilizer and dye. Hydroseeding is an effective method of establishing a new lawn, but has some downsides associated with it. In this article, we will provide the benefits and disadvantages of using hydroseeding to help you make your choice.

Benefits of Hydroseeding

Moisture for Establishment

Hydroseeding requires less initial moisture than other seeding methods because of the mulch additives added to the mixture, according to the University of Arizona Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. Derived from wood or paper products, the mulch used in hydroseeding helps hold in the moisture required to develop healthy turf.

Application on Slopes

Seeding a new lawn on a slope is difficult because of seed runoff during heavy rain periods. However, the additives used in the hydroseeding process helps the seed stick to the soil for established growth. However, after having my new lawn hydroseeded, I had the unfortunate experience of heavy rains for two weeks after application, which washed out the expensive seed.

Instant Coverage

Hydroseed mixture is dyed green so that the seeder can determine what areas have been or have not been seeded. The benefit to the dye is that it looks much more aesthetically pleasing than conventional seeding does. The seed also takes root faster than traditional seeding applications because of the added nutrients and reduced irrigation required. Hydroseeding also provides uniform application, which makes for a nicer looking lawn.

Disadvantages of Hydroseeding

Cost

Hydroseeding cost much more than traditional do-it yourself seeding does. This is because the process requires an experienced professional with the right equipment to apply the seed.

Type of Seed

The seeder is generally familiar with the type of grass seed that will grow best depending on your location and time of year of the seed application. However, you are limited to whatever seed is available by the hydroseeder, whereas traditional seeding methods do not limit the type of seed you wish to use.

Washout

Hydroseed is great for slopes or in places where traditional seeding methods do not take root easily. However, in the event of a washout from heavy rain periods, it is very expensive to repeat the process. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to weather conditions before application.

Time

The growing season for the specific grass type is vital for optimal hydroseeding effectiveness. For instance, warm season grasses grow best during the late spring to midsummer, whereas cool season grasses grow best during the late summer and early fall. Be aware of what type of grass you wish to use before contacting a hydroseeding company.
