Estate Planning is Not a Good DIY Project

Wes Gersh
Doing things for yourself can be a good idea on a number of different levels. For one thing you can save some money, and you may actually enjoy engaging in the DIY project. In this Internet age in which we are living there is an unbelievable amount of information available at your fingertips, and there are instructions for doing just about everything imaginable online. There are even do-it-yourself software kits for sale that allow you to simply "fill in the blanks" and voilĂ , you have simply, easily and inexpensively created your own estate plan.

Unfortunately you may want to take pause before you take any of these Internet marketers up on their offers. Estate planning is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor for a number of reasons, and this even includes drawing up a simple will. Each state has different rules and the probate court is expecting things to be presented in a particular manner depending on the jurisdiction within which you reside. Someone who is looking to make a buck on the Internet out of Las Vegas is unlikely to have in-depth knowledge of Kentucky probate law.

The fact is that planning your estate comprehensively and correctly is probably going to involve execution of a number of different financial planning vehicles and legal instruments. Learning legal intricacies on-the-fly is simply not a good DIY project, in spite of what you might read on some websites.

Any time you're going to file any type of legal document with the court it is always advisable to engage the services of an experienced attorney. There's a lot of money at stake when you are planning your estate, and the people who are affected are the ones that you love the most. Common sense will tell you that counting on a do-it-yourself kit to effectively pass your legacy to your love ones is probably not a very good idea.
