Ethos Gas Reformulator: Gas Saving Elixir or Same Old Snake Oil?

Demetria Dixon
As gas prices begin to rise, so do the number of products that promise to help you save money and get better gas mileage. Such a product has appeared on the horizon; Ethos Gas Reformulator. Websites and forums have popped up seemingly overnight touting the benefits of this new product. According to the company's press consumers who have used Ethos Gas Reformulator have reported savings of up to 19% off of their fuel costs as well as a 30% reduction in hydrocarbon emissions. Ethos also noted they had won several fleet contracts with companies such as Allied Waste and Precision Motor Transport Group and had undergone thousands of hours of testing in the company's fleets, all with phenomenal feedback.

The product is described as a formulation of light weight cleaning esters and heavier weight lubricating esters are said to be able to reformulate whether its gasoline, diesel, methanol, ethanol, LNG, compressed natural gas or bio-diesel. The release further states that the product in combination with the fuels reduces hazardous emissions such as Nitrous oxides and carbon monoxides but increases the release of O2 which is pure Oxygen, into the atmosphere. Based on EPA lab reports the product is said to be 99.99976% clean on ignition and to produce no ash upon combustion. Furthermore the product is said to contain no carcinogens.

Just how does Ethos Gas Reformulator save the consumer money and get better gas mileage? This is done by raising BTU (British Thermal Unit) levels which allow fuel to burn more completely. According to Ethos this results in a net gain in gas mileage. In addition to fuel efficiency, it is also supposed to increase the octane rating of gasoline which results in better engine performance. Because the heavier weight lubrication esters of the Ethos Fuel Reformulator are suspended in mineral oil versus a petroleum based lubricant, they allow engine parts to function more smoothly with reduced heat and less friction.

Scam or Not

Most of the Scam Watch sites just denounce Ethos Gas Reformulator and its parent company 4-E Corp. out of hand as a bunch of too good to be true hucksters. However, further research found that Enrique DeVilmorin who is the owner of Ethos and 4-E Corp. has been indicted for running fuel scams in the past. Turns out he was associated with a company called OmStar, which is where he got the original Ethos formulation. He then tried to reformulate the product but retain the original patent format to get his product patented. He was allegedly indicted back in 2006. For more information on Enrique Devilmorin please click here.

So what about all that phenomenal feedback Ethos Gas Reformulator received from those large and very prestigious companies? As it turns out, those companies' fleets are all running diesel engines. The safest assumption appears to be that Ethos Gas Reformulator can improve performance and increase mileage in diesel engines. I was unable to find any definitive proof that any studies such as those run at Precision Motor Transport Group or Allied Waste, have been run on any vehicles that have gasoline burning engines. As it turns out, the forums and scam watch sites were filled with entries from consumers who drive gasoline powered vehicles. In post after post they outlined how they had used the product and had seen no appreciable benefit and in some cases had experienced a decrease in performance.

The bottom line seems to be that if you have a diesel engine you may see an improvement in performance by using Ethos Gas Reformulator but if you're driving a gas powered car you'll have to stick to the tried and true. That would be slowing down, making sure your tires are properly inflated and taking a load off by removing heavy items from your car trunk or truck bed. Also avoid aggressive driving. Jack rabbit starts and sharp stops also boost gas usage.

Nigel J. Williams, the author of The Green Millionare, swears by this stuff and hes not a douche, he just wants to save the earth by going green, too. I mean maybe he is a douche but it seems like he really wants to save the earth... his 'go green' book is free after all.

It seems most of these people are doing all these calculations to prove to themselves whether or not the product works...I'm not sure. But, there are a few definitive news reports on Ethos Fuel Reformulator in particular where they measure exhaust particles on a test car using the same machines used to inspect cars. After using ethos the test car's exhaust fumes had significantly less UNburned fuel (meaning more fuel was burned, equaling a higher fuel economy). It was all there on the machine's computer screen, before and after. I mean it was FOX news, it maybe could have been edited, but thats what was there. Most of these sites and comments by people are biased anyways so its hard to convince yourself to give it a try, but I'm gonna give it a shot and hook it up to my mechanic friend's shop's machine and see if its for real or not for myself.

Likewise, I did not receive the promised gas cards. I didn't press the issue beyond one e-mail.

I decided to do a Google search for info about possible SCAM. Yesterday I wrote down details from all the gas receipts since I bought my KIA Sportage (Dec '07). All the numbers were exact (no rounding up). Before EthosFR, I averaged 21.05115 mpg. I started Ethos in July '08 and have averaged 19.978633 mpg. ~~ I was optimistic that the product would make a significant improvement in mileage because I wanted to travel (and gasoline prices were skyrocketing). I became a distributor but (as a woman) failed to persuade others. I was on autoship program so monthly received Ethos. I finally cancelled but I have enough fuel reformulator to last me for years!! ~~ I'd love to hear about other customers experience.

Don,t Expect any $ 25.00 credit card for reciepts sent I sent 2 months reciepts and never heard from them even sendig 2 emails requesting explanation as to why I never recieved any discount card. They just disregarded the emails and never replied.

I use Ethos and have seen very little improvement in gas mileage. What really upsets me is their promise to send a $25 gas gift card when you send in $100 in receipts from the same brand of gasoline. I have submitted receipts for two months and no cards have been received. It seems like I get the run-around whenever I inquire. Don't fall for their marketing ploys.

  • Ethos works for me...I've seen an incredible diffe7/13/2008

    Hi,

I drive a 1998 Honda Accord EX with a V-6 gas engine and the results I've experienced using Ethos since March 2008 have been simply amazing. First, my car has almost 108,000 miles on it and it drives and runs like "factory new", the increase in horsepower, smoothness, responsiveness have been very noticeable. Further, the gas mileage has increased from 20 MPG baseline (before Ethos) to 23MPG (after Ethos) and that equates to a 10.6% average increase after 8 tankfuls with Ethos usage. The company has proved themselves to be one of the highest integrity and professionalism. I became involved with them through a business partner as a distributor and we promulgating the "gospel of Ethos" to everyone we meet. I haven't been more excited about any kind of product in a very long time. Moreover, continual use of Ethos has been proven through tens of millions of miles in commercial and fleet vehicle road tests to deliver increased mileage, reduced emissions and lower operating costs.

Very nice article - as gas prices continue to rise, I think we're all looking for ways that we get a bit more mileage for our dollar. It seems like this product is not the way to go to do so!
