Ethos Water: Is This Product Really Worth It?

Donna Noble
"As a matter of fact the water you drink does make a difference" at least that is was the line proclaimed in the print ad for Ethos water. I probably would not have even looked at the ad if there hadn't been a large picture of actor Matt Damon playing in the sand with some children. Since the ad proclaimed that proceeds of this water bottled water would benefit H2O Africa I decided to do a bit of research on the company.

This research led me to their website www.ethoswater.com. I learned that the company Ethos Water was originally founded in 2003 and in 2005 was sold to Starbucks. Starbucks sells water? This is something I never knew but then again since I avoid Starbucks most of the time I had no reason to know this. Anyway, back to Ethos Water. The goal of this company is to help those in Africa, Asia, and Latin America by providing a clean and plentiful supply of water.

I'm for any company that gives a portion of their proceeds to helping nations develop. I have no problem buying an item just because a small portion will be going to help someone in need. I think it's a great idea. Having said that, I found myself really annoyed with the whole page ad right in the middle of my favorite magazine. Here is Matt Damon one of the biggest movie stars right now, People's sexiest man or the year for 2007 saying that the water we drink makes a difference. Then under the mission of the company and what they are hoping to accomplish it says that only 5 cents from each purchase of this water will go toward the effort.

Really 5 cents? That's it? Are you kidding me? I'm sure that Matt Damon has given his own donation to the company which is all well and good but seriously the company is only using 5 cents from each sale for aid? Is it me or does this seem a bit strange? Given that the company promotes a humanitarian effort shouldn't they be giving more? Instead of making a trip to Starbucks to purchase this Ethos Water I think I will just write a check and be done with it. Maybe then the money will go to the people who need the water rather than a large corporation like Starbucks. Just my opinion.
