Eurail Pass Guide

Moira Riley
If you're going to pay the money for a plane ticket to get to Europe why not go to more than one country? A great way to experience Europe is by traveling on the Eurail system. This is a great way to sit back and relax while you get to see some of the more rural areas of different countries. The most important thing to know about purchasing a Eurail pass is that you must do it while you are still in the United States. The Eurail pass will then be mailed to you. The next thing you need to know is that there are a lot of choices of what types of passes you can purchase. Here is a guide to the most common options.

Eurail Pass #1
The global pass is the pass that most people know about. The Eurail global pass allows you access to 21 different countries. With this pass you can travel unlimited for a duration of 15 days - 3 months or you can choose to travel 10 or 15 days over a period of 2 months.

Eurail Pass #2
The select pass is probably the best pass if you will be traveling among countries that are bordering each other and you have an itinerary so you know how many days you will likely be traveling. You can choose from 3,4 or 5 neighboring countries and travel from 5-15 days within a two month period. This is cheaper than the global pass so I would consider trying to come up with a vague itinerary to see if maybe this pass would work the best for your trip.

Eurail Pass #3
The next pass is the regional pass. If you want to travel to travel in two countries that border each other then the regional pass might be the best for you. This pass will allow you to travel 5-10 days within a two month period. The regions are preset so just check to see if they have a combination that fits your desire. One neat thing is that Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are considered on area for the Eurail system so you can get a regional pass that really includes more than two countries if you are interested in that area.

Eurail Pass #4
The next pass is the Eurail one country pass. This pass allows you to travel 3-8 days within a one month period. This would be great for a larger country so that you can travel around and see the different regions.

Eurail Pass Final Advice
If you're only going to be traveling from one city to the next you may just want to purchase one ticket for that specific trip. If you have two people traveling together and one person fits the youth age but the other doesn't then its best to pay for the saver pass. The youth ticket is second class and the adult is first class. So if you buy the separate ones you'll have to split up on the train.
