Pros
The Eureka 5A only has a 5-amps motor. Make no mistake, while 12-amps motors may have been the "standard" the suction power of Eureka 5A is simply great. It's all thanks to its simplistic design which lets the air flow straight without going through loops and holes. It works well for cleaning bare floors, rugs and carpets. One sweep across your carpet and it can pick up dust, dirt, hair and crumbs just as good as the 12-amps uprights. The disposable liner bag on this unit is just huge. It would take some heavy cleaning for a fair amount of time to make it half full.
Since most of the body is made of plastic this vacuum is quite light; only 11 pounds. It's much lighter than the old model and thanks to that it is easier to carry and maneuver. This upright won't break your eardrums too. It's not the quietest vacuum in the market but it is quieter than average uprights.
The controls for this vacuum is located on the base. This is actually a mix. Some people say foot controls are easy to use and convenient while others prefer the controls on the handle. Those who prefer foot controls like it because when the controls are put on the handle they can be accidentally clicked or changed.
Cons
Even on the lowest setting this vacuum is still hard to go under a short table and under the bed. It also lacks necessary attachment to clean upholstery. The power cord is only 20 feet and non-retractable.
The biggest grief about this vacuum would be the filtration. If you or your family has allergy or asthma this vacuum is not for you since very fine dust can still go through the vacuum bag.
Conclusion
For people wanting a good basic upright the Eureka 5A is a good choice. For $98 you could get a vacuum with HEPA filter system but if nobody in your home has asthma or allergy this low-maintenance vacuum should be in your to-buy list.
