Some of the most brilliant work has been done in Russia. Some of this work was done when it was called the Soviet Union. There were abuses in psychiatry in the Soviet Union, but there was also brilliant research.
Savulev (1967)
Savulev demonstrated a toxic factor in the blood of schizophrenics using rats as an assay. He found that the unknown toxin caused swelling and destruction of both the tigroid substance (the synthetic apparatus) and the mitochondria. Both organelles house amino acids, but the mitochondria also house carbohydrates. The mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. They produce the energy the cell needs in the form of ATP. This brilliant Soviet work was almost completely ignored in the US, which was a terrible mistake. Only a few Detroit workers kept up with the Soviet work.
Savulev's work could be explained if amino acids were flooding the cells. This could cause destruction of both the tigroid substance and the mitochondria.
Aganova & Uranova (1992)
This Russian group used the electron microscope to study schizophrenia. They reported swelling of synapses in layers 1 and 2 of area 24. This is a Brodmann area which is also called the anterior cingulate gyrus.
Orlovskaya, Savulev, & Oifa (1978)
This Russian group reported histopathology in schizophrenia. They found "acute swelling" of neurons using the electron microscope. Because of this and other similar findings (Averback, 1981a, 1981b), I formulated a theory that the cells are overeating some macronutrietns in schizophrenia. But what are the macronutrients? Read on.
Kleshchinov & Oifa (1986)
These Russian workers reported "swelling of cysterns of the endoplasmic reticulum and loss of polysomes". This would probably happen if the cell was flooded with amino acids. The cisterns house amino acids. The polysomes are used to convert them to proteins.
Bonartsev (1976)
In a brilliant paper that has been almost completely ignored in the US, Bonartsev found the lymphocytes of schizophrenics to be "activated". This means that the synthetic apparatus was actively forming proteins from amino acids. This greatly strengthens the theory of amino acids flooding the cells.
French Work
From 1904 to 1909 Klippel & Lhermitte published papers reporting many findings. Pathology was seen in deep cortical layers. There was disappearance of Nissl bodies. Lipid deposits appeared in the cytoplasm. There was a marked reaction of the neuroglia. Similar findings were reported in the subcortical nuclei.
Conclusions
This is only a small fraction of the brilliant European findings. Alzheimer of Germany reported similar findings in several papers (1897, 1900, 1913) including fat deposits and pigment deposits. The fat deposits further strengthen my theory that the cells are overeating due to a transport error. The destruction of the Nissl bodies, which house amino acids, strongly suggest that the offending substances are amino acids. Unfortunately it does not tell us which amino acids are involved. They might all be involved.
The amino acid theory suggests a diet very low in protein such as the PKU diet. In this diet meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, etc. are banned because they have too much protein. Animal products are to be avoided.
