1. The first type of umbrella is the most popular and is often in high demand. It is the clear PVC dome umbrella, better known as the Bubble Umbrella, or Birdcage Umbrella. This umbrella provides extra rain protection with its dome shape, that covers both head and shoulders, while maintaining a look that is completely sheik. European websites offer the Birdcage Umbrella with the option of tinted PVC, or with a colored trim (in black, white, blue, pink, etc.), while U.S. websites are more limited. Check out Totes Bubble Umbrella, the Burberry Birdcage Umbrella, and the Pink/Blue trimmed Clear Dome Umbrellas (on Umbrellas.com) for stylish versions located in the U.S.
2. The Retro-Chic automatic opening umbrella is a dainty polka-dotted umbrella with a gathered frill trim that is reminiscent of the 60's and 70's. Its slight dome and crook handle make this umbrella so cute you'll think you're a modern Minnie Mouse. It's so unique that you'll have trouble finding it's like anywhere. Try the Lace Queen Dot and the adorable Hannah, both found at the Seattle located PareUmbrella.com.
3. The Tulip umbrella definitely one of a kind. The curved, contrast piping over the muted-colored canopy gives the illusion of a blossoming flower. It looks both elegant and classy, and is difficult to find anything like it sold in the U.S. PareUmbrella.com has come close with their Simply Gold (comes in black, red, and pink) and the sassy Sorbet. Try Simply Gold for something more classic, and Sorbet for something unique.
4. Lace, whether black or white, looks absolutely lovely on an umbrella. That's why Lace Effect umbrellas are wonderful ways to capture the delicate construction of lace in a weather-resistant umbrella. Unfortunately, Lace Effect umbrellas, while conveying a gorgeous look that is often a head-turner, are often difficult to find, especially in the U.S. Again, PareUmbrella.com saves the day. Check out Lace G (a favorite!) with it's lace graphic and lace trim, and Lace, Lace, Lace! with it's four layers of lace graphic along with other lacy accents.
5. The Pinstripe Pagoda Umbrella is a uniquely shaped umbrella with pinstripes contrasting its colorful background, and 12 ribs as oppose to the usual 8. The Pagoda shape was created by H.DUE.O and is both original and stunning. Totes sells a similarly shaped and equally stunning Vintage Parasol, though it may not be as weather-friendly. If you're into the pinstriped look or an equally stunning effect check out PareUmbrella.com's Lady of Stripe (a 16 rib umbrella), the saucy Stella Square, or the toned-down Mani.
6. The After Dark Mini-Folding Umbrella does not only come in snazzy designs, but come in a matching tote and fits perfectly into your purse or pocket. Earthy prints, such as the Jeweled Peacock, the Golden Woodland, and Doves and Songbirds, make up the pretty collection. They are designed by Totes, but appear to not be sold be them online. You can find many sleek substitutes on Umbrellas.com, that come in almost every color, and also several prints. If your into the earthy-style prints in full-size, check out Bloom, Blossom, Perch, Grass, Citrus and other cool prints on Tray6.com.
7. The Superslim Umbrella is the lightest, thinnest umbrella seen anywhere. It's only 3cm wide, yet is full sized when opened. Brookstone got close with their Ultra-Slim Umbrella, but only got as far as 1 inch. Still definitely worth a look, as it can fit easily in a briefcase or jacket.
8. Double-skin Art Umbrellas are both pretty and classy. The black canopy on the outside hides the work of art that is printed underneath for the umbrella holder to enjoy. They are a little tricky to find, but check out Monet's Lady with Umbrella to see some artwork on the outside, or, my personal favorite, the Sky Umbrella Stick, which displays a serene blue sky with a few clouds on the underside of the umbrella (black canopy on outside) on Umbrellas.com.
All the European styles listed here can be found at Brolliesgalore.co.uk. The site is absolutely terrific and has the largest selection of umbrellas I have ever seen. Many of the European styles shown on the site can be purchased second-hand from Ebay, if you find that you don't like the American counterparts. I hope this was helpful to those trying to find that extra stylish edge on those rainy days.
