What is euthanasia? Euthanasia is painless killing to relieve suffering. But there are two types of euthanasia; voluntary euthanasia and involuntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia is when it is your choice to seek an easy death. Involuntary euthanasia is when you are unable to voice your opinion about whether you want euthanasia or not.
Some people think that euthanasia is a good idea. It can relieve tremendous pain, maintains dignity, and allows the family be at ease. If people don't want a slow and agonizing death it would sometimes be better to use euthanasia than to go thru suffering until your body finally gives out. It can also allow you to die with some dignity instead of having an illness reduce you to nothing. Also using euthanasia can let your family relax a bit and not have to worry about you so much.
Along with the thought that euthanasia is a good idea there are people that say euthanasia is a horrible thing. If a doctor used euthanasia it would violate the Hippocratic Oath. The Oath says "Do not harm." This oath was created so that patients knew doctors were there to help them. Another reason is if doctors are given this power they might abuse it. The doctor might use euthanasia when it is not really necessary. Also the family of the one who is sick could give up too early; the patient could always have a miraculous recovery.
Dr. Jack Kevorkian is sometimes called Dr. Death. Dr Jack Kevorkian is 79 years old today and is responsible for over 100 assisted deaths by using a homemade suicide machine called the Thanatron. On June 4, 1990 he had his first victim, her name was Janet Adkins. During court the murder charges were dropped because the state of Michigan had no laws against assisted suicide. I feel that he should have been put in jail right then and there so he couldn't kill anymore people.
So now you can see I'm sort of against euthanasia for these reasons; it would violate the Hippocratic Oath, doctors could abuse the power, and family could give up too early. What do you think?
