Evan Bourne Still Flying on RAW

A Look at Bourne's Surprising Performance Against Chris Jericho

In my previous article, 'Bourne To Be Wild', I questioned whether or not WWE would continue with Evan Bourne's push or instead feed him to the likes of Sheamus. Last week on RAW, Bourne faced Chris Jericho who has been stuck in a rut the passed few weeks. Jericho's losing streak began when it was announced online that he would be taking some time off to host upcoming ABC game show "Downfall". Apparently Jericho didn't inform WWE management of exactly how much time away from the ring this particular endeavor would require, and it seems like the first Undisputed Champion is being punished.

Punishment may not have been the best word, but the first that comes to mind. Jericho is such a unique and valuable talent in that he can be used to elevate lower tiered talent one day and pin the top dog for the World Title the next. Jericho's "punishment" could potentially reward many up-and-coming superstars without doing too much harm to Jericho.

One of these superstars could be Evan Bourne whose hand was raised in his bout with Jericho last week. The story here though isn't the victory, which came as a disqualification after Jericho relentlessly attacked Bourne on the ropes dismissing the in-ring official's warnings. This attack came after Bourne kicked out of Jericho's finishing maneuver the 'Code Breaker'. Jericho has used the Code Breaker to finish established main eventers, bigger stars than Evan Bourne. I can't honestly recall the last time someone kicked out of a Code Breaker, especially one with not much delay between the execution and the pin-fall attempt.

The booking of this match was perfect in my opinion. Evan Bourne looks good out there with rebound attacks but Jericho dominated the match. Bourne wasn't made to look weak though, and at the same time, neither was Jericho. Jericho's facial expression after Bourne kicked out of his Code Breaker told such a brilliant story. His look was that of shock, disbelief, entitlement. Bourne doesn't DESERVE to kick out of the Code Breaker, Jericho must have thought.

In the end, Bourne leaves RAW having celebrating two huge victories. Not only did Bourne earn the victory over future Hall of Famer Chris Jericho, but he also had a "moment" in WWE. WWE has always prided itself in giving superstars and fans moments to remember, and kicking out of the Code Breaker was most certainly a moment for Bourne. Could this be the beginning of big things for young Evan Bourne?
