Evanescene was brought to life by a big rock single at just the right time and the other singles fell in line like dominoes. I've always had a liking for female led rock bands, when they actually have talent that is. The Evanescence album "Fallen" was one I owned right out of the gates and enjoyed. Over time the songs kind of lost their magic and seemed to blend into one long wail, however, it's been years since I have tuned into the set list and here are my thoughts now in 2011.
"Going Under": A gothic puppet dance of ballroom proportions, this song shows off the singer's range and ability to shape the heart of pop rock with the wicked knife of emotion. Power rock single that earned the power.
"Bring Me To Life": This was the hit that put Evanescence on the map, operatic rock, with some industrial loopsy-doos and hooky as all yeah-yeah. It remains a force to reckon with in the realms of pop rock history.
"Everybody's Fool": It opens and I think it is going to remain in the singer's nasal cavity, but the song blossoms and the chorus is very addictive in its delivery. The album "Fallen" opens three-for-three.
"My Immortal": A powerful piano driven ballad that is more beautiful than not and will be a signature song in the legacy of Evanescence. Four-for-four!
"Haunted": The opera ghost sounds get a little silly-ish, but the song itself seems to take up where "Bring Me To Life" left off, while remaining it's own, though more in the same vein ala B side feel.
"Tourniquet": This song benefits from "classic" status ala it is imprinted in my mind from being played in the past and now revisited my brain is wooed into liking it, whereas when the album first came out it was not on any of my playlists. It makes Christian rock fairly cool really, with lyrics "My God, my tourniquet, return to me salvation."
"Imaginary": There are some very interesting lyrics, but the sound of the song makes the crooner more monotonous than not.
"Taking Over Me": A slight step back to solid ground from the previous track, the good kind of filler.
"Hello": I recalled Evanescence having a hit piano ballad, but heck if I didn't recall they had two on the album "Fallen." This one has some corny lyrics here and there, but overall it is another sorrow driven piece that is a winner. It has a strong theme that can be deciphered to involve sanity and the inner self.
"My Last Breath": It lurks in the shadows with some good qualities, but it doesn't have the it quality to make it shine.
"Whisper": It's all in effect here again, the opera woos, the singer's similar vocal deliver choices, but it's on display proudly as this song is a good track, doesn't feel like too many visits to the well.
