Evangelion 1.0 Released Summer 2009

According to animenewsnetwork.com, we only have a short waiting period before we finally get to see the new re-imagining of Evangelion the anime. Summer 2009 we should be seeing Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. Four new movies are to be made of the Evangelion series, with everything recreated. Better animation, different plot and imagery, and a completely new experience.

An incredibly popular anime, and a definite must see for any anime enthusiast, featured intense psychological and mystical imagery, with deep characterization and amazing metaphors and dialogue. Christianity, Kabbalah, Freudian and Jungian psychology, and so many other levels of imagery and concepts, Evangelion swarmed the depths of the mind for every inch of its story. This is what appealed to most fans, as before this there were few really psychological anime, especially in the mecha vein.

About two years ago, it was said in Newtype magazine that Evangelion was going to be recreated. At first I was excited, but then the creator stated that the anime was going to be simpler and easier to understand.

For me, the excitement about Evangelion was in its ambiguous nature, where the watcher could mine from it any interpretation. However, without seeing the anime yet, it is hard to tell if this is going to be a good change or not. I am assuming it will be more focused while still maintaining the psychological complexity, but I am still somewhat wary. Without the charm of its psychology, I would have to begrudgingly say that Evangelion may just turn out like every other mecha anime.

As for the voice acting crew, except for Misato and Shinji it appears as if the voice acting crew is different (disappointing for characters such as Gendo), but I am still open to the series.

While excitement surrounds the new anime and its release, I am still wary about how good it will be. I became incredibly attached to the original voice actors, as they added great life to the characters, and though some are the same, it is hard to say how they will do before the anime is released.

Also the simpler mindset may turn out bad, or focused, depending on how Anno meant it. I am going to give it a chance, as should every other Evangelion fan. Another month or two, and we should all see it to have our own entertainment, or misgivings, about the anime revealed.
