Evelyn

A Poem

L. Lee Scott
A shy sweet smile,
A demure gaze
Up from her lowered head.

(To my grandmother, Evelyn Drake Scott, who was flirt, "rug-cutter," eloper, wife, mother, grandmother -- and loved by all who knew her.)

Can you see the gleam in her eye?
Can she see the life ahead?
Joy and sorrow and joy again...

A secret courtship,
Braving her father's wrath
When good girls didn't

An elopement,
Secret marriage,
and some trouble ahead...

Joy in her Buddy-love,
Who loved his Evy
Until the day he died

Together again,
Young and free,
in the sweetest place.

Their lives joined by fate
By love
By the legacy of family.
Together forever.

Quite a story and a beautiful tribute to her independence. Great that is worked out so well, sometime things like this don't.

Cool poem. Great way to pass on tradition. It gives just enough information to provoke interest.

Somehow this got messed up during publication -- the dedication to my grandmother was FIRST when I submitted it! Thank you, Elena, for your comment!
