Even Pets Need Something Under the Christmas Tree

Susan Antonelli
So many households have pets nowadays. Thepet industry hasbecome a billion dollar industry when it comes to keeping pets supplied with everything from food to clothing. Now it's the holidays and you can bet there are plenty of fabulous things you can indulge your favorite furry family member.

First of all your dog, cat or bird should have his or her own stocking. These are available monogrammed or not. You can get ones shaped like a paw or knit, quilted, padded or you can get one that has a tapestry picture of the breed you have. Some of the cutest stockings for cats or dogs have little fish or dog bones charms attached to the cuff.

Now, once you have our stocking picked out you have to fill it with goodies. Rawhide candy canes are very seasonal, Holiday rawhide boxes are filled with rawhide lollipops so every bit of the gift is edible and fun. You can get Christmas cuddler, little stuffed squaky toys if your pet likes plulsh. For cats there is the Mouse shaped value pack full of catnip toys and chase toys.

Perhaps kitty would like a boogie mat. its a mat with zipped pockets you can fill with catnip.

A collar with your cat or dogs name embroidered on it is not only a good looking item but it comes with your phone number as well. This way if your pet wanders whoeever finds it can call you. We have those for our dogs with our cell phone numbers on them. Practical and cute. You can get Christmas collars in red or green with bells, very festive. Or perhaps you want formal attire. You can get a white collar with a black bowtie so it looks like your pet has a tuxedo on. Cut for family photos. There are collars with candy cane designs or holly designs.

A dog sweater with a Christmas or Holiday theme also makes a nice look for your photo ops under the tree or in front of a fireplace. We got our dogs Santa outfits and posed them on a plaid blanket in the snow near evergreens so we could use this in our Christmas cards. Speaking of blanket i's always nice to have a doggy blanket in the car or on the couch. They also sell heated doggy blankets for those of us who live in a cold climate. This way if you take your dog with you on a cold day the blanket will stay warm and keep the pet comfortable.

Perhaps your dog is in need of a new bed. There are heated beds, plaid beds, thermo beds, foam beds, bed with a paw print design, beds with sherpa lining and beds meant for indoor/outdoor use. YOu can get your cat a nice fleecey play house

You can announce to visitors that you hav a dog or cat by putting out a mat that says "Santa I've been DOGgone good" or "Santa I've been PURRfect" depending on what pet you have. If you have both put one inside the door and one outside the door.

For birds there are colored treats, colored wooden Christmas toys for them to chip away at and you can just get them theire faaavotire food treat and indulge them on the Holidays. No sock for the bird we had he would have chewed it to shreds.

If you don't have the time to shop around for pet goodies buy a stocking already filled with canine or feline treats and toys. YOu can find them in sizees ranging up to 39".

Want to go over the top? Have a custom made dog house uilt for your pampered pooch. You can get teh dog version of the Southern Mansion, Tara, a Mini Victorian mansion, an Asian Temple, a Greek Revival style but these will be quite costly.

Christmas for the pet population is almost an industry in itself.

Don't forget bunnies! If you want your animals to actually open their own gifts, put a treat in it that has a strong smell- I use fresh mint for the bunnies and catnip for the cats.

We always put something under the tree for our pets. They are part of the family.
