Even Wonder Woman Needs an Update to Wardrobe

And Gets Two--First Deemed Not Patriotic Enough

Fans of the iconic 1975-1979 Wonder Woman television series are not sure what to think of the remake of Wonder Woman.

The 1975 pilot show began with Wonder Woman returning from Paradise Island after a 35-year absence and assuming the identity of agent Diana Prince with the Inter-Agency Defense Command (IADC), a "Central Intelligence Agency"; CIA-like organization fighting criminals and the occasional alien invasion.

Lynda Carter's earnest performance as Wonder Woman in the TV show became indelibly imprinted in the minds of her fans as did her costume. Her red boots, red top, and star spangled briefs, along with the plots, seemed fashioned to show patriotism to the United States.

Time marches on and clothing styles change as do tastes in television and movies.

Wonder Woman is being remade by Boston Legal writer David E. Kelley, who has incorporated the superhero's signature lasso, cuffs, and plane in the pilot. NBC promises the project, if picked up to series, will offer a serious, non-campy take on the DC Comics character.

Adrianne Palicki stars as Wonder Woman. Elizabeth Hurley Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) and Cary Elwes Saw, The Princess Bride have joined the cast. Hurley's character runs a pharmaceutical company that is creating a drug that makes people stronger while Elwes plays the CEO of Diana's company, Themyscira Industries.

The creators of the remake had second thoughts about Palicki's costume. The original costume showed Andrianna wearing bright blue polyvinyl pants, matching blue boots, and a red star in the center of her top.

The updated costume shows a more patriotic look, although the red star on the top has been replaced by a bird. But, the red boots are back. Her pants, although suitably tight, are a darker blue and possess notably less polyvinyl sheen than the first costume. The well-documented series plot finds Wonder Woman, a.k.a. Diana Prince, fighting LA crime vigilante style while juggling duties as a corporate executive. Elizabeth Hurley and Cary Elwes will share Palicki's spotlight as arch villain and the CEO of Prince's company respectively.

Fans criticized Palicki's pencil-slim figure as not Amazon looking. One fan noted that David E. Kelly, who also made the TV show Ally McBeal, must like his females tiny as pretty much every main actress on that show had a eating disorder of some sort. Perhaps Andrianne will gain more muscle if the show is picked up as a series.

However, Lynda Carter told gossip website E! Online: ' I think she looks fabulous. I t's a new look and, jeez, her body looks fantastic!'

One thing I always wondered about Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman, and even more so the Palicki's Wonder Woman, "How does that chest-baring top stay put when running, jumping off buildings, fighting, etc.?"

Maybe that's one reason Wonder Woman is, well, Wonder Woman.
