Events of September 12th

Greg Seltz
Assisted by my own curiosity, a Google search discovered numerous accounts and events that took place on this day. Wikipedia also proved very informative, as always. Though I will conclude this article briefly as it lacks anything of interest, my intentions are simply designed to speculate at how little we may, or may not, know about the day of our births. As I also acknowledge that many of you will share more entertaining, profound historical events than that of my own, here it goes....

September 12, 1857, the SS Central America sinks nearly 160 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Including over 400 unfortunate souls, 15 tons of gold mined from the San Francisco Gold Rush sank to the bottom of the sea. One interesting fact regarding the incident involves the time it took to recover the treasure. The tragic event postponed transportation of the gold for exactly 30 years, where it remained nestled along the seafloor.

1910-1992: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 is performed, Adolf Hitler spies on the German Worker's Party, 32,000 year old cave paintings are discovered in France, RMS Laconia is attacked and sinks during World War II, Greg Seltz is born, NASA launches it's fiftieth shuttle mission with the first female African American, .............

In 1983, a Wells Fargo bank in Connecticut is robbed of nearly 7 million dollars by Los Macheteros, or "machete wielders." After relinquishing a small portion of the money to the West Hartford streets, the remaining sum is said to have funded further operations of Puerto Rican terrorism.

Though it appears that many of the historical events taken place on this date are of foreign affairs, I noticed many famous Americans with similar birthdays. George Jones, Joe Pantoliano, Jason Statham, Benjamin McKenzie, Paul Walker, and Bizzy Bone are a few highlighted stars. Unfortunately, with life comes death. Steve Biko, Anthony Perkins, and Johnny Cash are a few names I recognized.

For those of you interested, Wikipedia will detail all major events according to their respective date. Simply search for the month and day you were born, and educate yourself with a brief understanding of the events. Apparently, other than my birth, nothing of any magnitude actually occurred on the day of my birth, however, in 1985.
