The most traditional way of celebrating St. Patrick's Day in New York involves going to 5th avenue for the parade. After all of the bag pipes and hustle, a traditional St. Patrick's Day must include a visit to the nearest Irish pub. This year add something new by including any of the following events to the traditional venue.
First on my list is McSorley's is New York City's oldest pub, established in 1854, this place offers a unique old-school pub ambiance. A total sense of history is present with sawdust-covered floors and a legendary backroom where traditional ale was poured during the Prohibition. Interesting history includes the fact that women have only been allowed to come to this pub after the 1970's. Located at 15 E 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue, 212-473-9148.
Next, what would St. Patrick's Day celebration be without music? The Pogues are in concert and if you don't know much about them, all you need to know is that they are one of biggest Irish bands from the eighties. They will be presenting at the Roseland Ballroom on March 12, 13 and 14th. For details please visit www.livenation.com .
If you think you can handle two days, five miles and 30 pubs then consider purchasing tickets with Murphguide for the 10th annual "Luck of the Irish" Pub Crawl. Starting on March 15th and ending on March 17th this is event is truly fun and exciting. In particular it is great to see the college kids outperform the middle aged guys in the beer consumption. Ladies this is a nice Valentine's gift for your man so give it a try. For details visit www.murphguide.com
The last event on my list is visiting the Irish Arts Center located in the center of New York City in the section of Hell's Kitchen. The center has events including, language, dance, and theater performances celebrating the Irish culture. To see what is lined up for this year visit www.irishartscenter.org.
Living in the suburbs of New Jersey, I have enjoyed the St. Patrick's Day Parade for many years. But every once in a while, I like to change things up by attending some of the nontraditional events to really take in the St. Patrick's Day celebration.
