Every Delivery is Different

I was prepared. I knew what to expect. I had watched the movies. I had read the books. I was a soldier in the motherhood army and proudly marched forward. That lasted until the Doctor broke my water. This was my first delivery and I had been in labor since 7:00 p.m. the night before. My husband and I drove to the hospital at about 4:00 a.m. and they admitted me.

Around 6:00 a.m. I saw my Doctor and he broke my water. Now when you read that you think "hmm no big deal, they broke her water." It can be a painful process and for me it was filled with vomit and buckets and just a terrible thing. He broke my water and I was ok until the first contraction happened and I threw up everywhere. To add insult to injury the nurse said "would you like to take a shower?" I was thinking alright I'll get cleaned up and then we'll have this baby. Then she said, "oh wait, he broke your water, you can't take a shower, sorry." WHAT! So, then the next contraction hit and I threw up again. I told my husband to get the nearest bucket. It was a bucket that was used for something else, but at that moment I didn't care. I thought oh great, I am going to be puking every contraction. Luckily that did not happen, my husband suggested to the nurses to get me some medicine to help stop the vomiting. So all this wonderful action took place in a matter of 30 minutes.

I thought ok, water is broke, check, puking has stopped, check, now let's have a baby. Text book theory of course stating that I would only be there a few hours. The clock ticked, ticked, ticked. Finally at around 5:00 p.m. the Doctor stopped by to check on me. I was ready to push! YAY. Or so I thought. I began pushing and they were discussing all the things going on. and then the Doc gets called away. Here I am still pushing. He goes and delivers a baby and comes back and I am still pushing. I kept asking "when do you think I'll have the baby?" He said, "I thought you would have had him by now so I don't know." So I kept on pushing until they had to put me on oxygen and then I pushed some more. I had not eaten since the night before so my sugar and energy were low. My Doctor told the nurse to go get me a soda. Finally at 6:42 p.m. ,yes that's right 2 hour later, my beautiful baby boy was born! The first thing I told my husband was go get me a burger and fries! His favorite food is fries!
