You have been working at the same company for many years. You do very well. You get the tasks completed that you are required to complete. You have great performance reviews. You are never late to work without a legitimate reason. Recently, a position has come open that you have had your eye on since its current occupant announced retirement. You hold seniority. Now you are wondering how to go about getting that position, and getting the raise that goes with it. It's as simple as asking for the promotion.

You're problem with asking for the promotion that you believe you deserve is actually that it is more difficult than it seems. You may feel that there is more than simply just walking into your boss' office and saying that you want the promotion. In reality, it's a lot easier than you may think it is. By this point, it was harder to get the interview that got you the position that you hold now.

The first step that you need to take is to make sure that the position is really open, and that there is not actually another person in line for the job. It shows a high level of professionalism. When you research information about the position, you should have learned what he pay rates are, including what it starts at and what the top out rate is. Convey this knowledge during your appointment. The general idea of this special appointment is to sell yourself for the position. You may want to consider it like an initial interview, even if you have been with the company for a long period of time. Your boss needs to know what new insights that you can bring to the company thorough your promotion into the new position.
