Some parents feel that if they themselves weren't excellent mathematicians; then their children are bound to have a hard time with the subject. Some parents also feel that most mathematical concepts are not useful in careers other than health, science or engineering. They feel that if their child has no interest in the fields that employ mathematical principles constantly, then what's the point in encouraging their child to have anything other than basic math skills?
Despite these beliefs widely held by many parents and adults, math has many benefits in life. The study of-and respect for-mathematics can build many skills that can encourage the development of strong and effective adults.
There are many everyday activities that a parent can use to teach their child about math. These activities will show your child how important math can be in everyday life; and how important it is to Mommy and Daddy.
These activities can also prepare the child to look forward to the more complex mathematical concepts that will be coming up in the next 10 years. These activities are also a great way to show your appreciation as a parent for their hard work in mathematics.
Some Simple Ideas
Sorting Socks: This is an activity that emphasizes counting along with size, shape and color comparison. This also helps with sorting and compartmentalizing. When socks disappear; your child will have to solve a problem. Should they throw the sock out or will it work well with a partially mismatched mate?
Cooking: Cooking helps with problem solving; weights and measuring. It also combines mathematics with sensory recognition.
Hopscotch: Hopscotch helps with counting, shape and number recognition.
Monopoly: Monopoly helps with financial reasoning and financial concepts. It also teaches how money relates to mathematics through counting and figuring.
Pizza Eating: Pizza eating is a good foundation for algebraic concepts like diameter and circumference and triangles.
These are just a few activities that can help kids learn math. If a parent opens their eyes; they will surely find many more activities like these.
Mathematics are present in all areas in life and in all areas of the home.
In order to help your child be strong mathematically; there are many things that can be done in the home that will compliment and accentuate what is learned in the classroom. These activities will help children with learning basic math skills and more complex ones as well.
