Finding a classic Bordeaux wine that is elegant, complex and reasonable price isn't as hard as it might seem. Due to the grape varieties grown throughout the region with a little digging you can find some outstanding vintages that won't break the bank.
Below are a few Bordeaux wines, both red and white for under $35 that will satisfy the most experienced wine drinker's palette along with those new to wonderful tastes of Bordeaux wines.
Chateau de Reignac Cuvee Speciale 2005 - This is a true steal, starting at around $32, this red wind made up of a mostly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend is intoxicating right from the smoky and sweet nose that is followed by flavors of dark berries and stone fruits inside a medium body that is extremely fresh and enjoyable. This is a sure bet for a tasty Bordeaux under $35 and can be enjoyed now or in 5-10 years from now.
Chateau Puy-Blanquet St.Emilion Grand Cru 2006 - Starting at around $25 a bottle this is one extremely satisfying red wine for the price. An almost honey and lemon like bouquet hits you off the bat, as the flavors in your mouth develop to reveal a sophisticated blend of tropical fruits and citrus, an almost white wine type experience found in a young red. This wine is mostly comprised of Merlot grapes and is becoming a favorite through out the wine community, pick it up to enjoy now or wait until it reaches it full maturity between 2012-2015.
Chateau Doisy-Vedrines 2005 - This white dessert wine from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux is a great find for the price of around $27. Extremely well balanced and fresh, the flavors are of tropical fruit, honey, apricot and a touch of citrus that finishes long on the palette and is a rather complex dessert wine for the price.
Chateau Jean Faux 2005 - Known as one of the most complex and affordable red wines of the Bordeaux region starting at around $25, this rather rich full bodied wine with a nice tannic punch and flavors of deep plum and cherry is a great wine to serve at the dinner table without breaking a hole in the bank every week.
Clos Jean Loupiac 2003 - From the Loupiac region of Bordeaux this is a red dessert wine that unlike most dessert wines from the Sauternes I find this vintage to be a bit more refined, complex and extremely well balanced. I'm not a huge fan of dessert wines but starting at $25 a bottle and featuring some beautiful flavors of peach and other stone fruits this is a great alternative to Sauternes region dessert wines and pairs extremely well with food.
Chateau Haut-Bergey Blanc 2005 - A very fresh and bright white wine from Bordeaux starting at $34 a bottle features wonderful flavors of lemon, honeysuckle and other citrus flavors that are well balanced and yummy. The smoky wood nose and crisp finish make this great Bordeaux white for the price.
Clos Floridene 2006 - This very nice white Bordeaux from comprised of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon varietals is extremely fruity, young and fresh. Well balanced with flavors of honey and tree fruit this is a very nice intense white wine for only around $25.
