FIRST PERSON | This week on "The Glee Project," the final four competed for a 7-episode arc on "Glee." It was a happy ending that embodied "Glee's" spirit of "inclusion."
For the final homework assignment, contestants performed the "Glee" anthem "Don't Stop Believing." As Damian sang his first line, guest mentor Ryan Murphy stopped them to complain about the lack of choreography. In a twist, Ryan brought back the entire top 12 to perform alongside the finalists. Given that this was the finale, there was no winner for this week's homework assignment.
For the group performance, the top 12 performed Pink's "Raise Your Glass." After all these weeks, Cameron still stands out more than anyone. He's a star, and it's no surprise he was voted America's fan favorite.
The final four gave last chance performances for Ryan, Ian Brennan, and the current "Glee" cast members who had served as mentors.
Lindsay performed "Gimme Gimme" from "Thoroughly Modern Millie." If there's one thing about her, it's that she takes direction well, even when the directions are as abstract as "show more vulnerability." Although I was rooting for Marissa this season, Lindsay showed tremendous growth throughout the competition.
Damian brought the old-school charm with his infectious performance of "Beyond the Sea." It's hard not to love this guy.
Samuel made a wise move by singing "Jolene" by Dolly Parton. Stepping out of his comfort zone as a rocker, he showed a softer side with this performance.
Alex dressed in drag and sang "I'm Changing" from "Dreamgirls." This guy may be a one-trick pony, but he's impressive with what he does.
Ryan loved how Alex represented "Glee's" spirit of inclusion, and said that he had a bright future -- but he was not the winner of "The Glee Project." Ryan felt Lindsay had come the furthest and had done everything that was asked of her, but she was not the winner either.
The mentors as well as Ryan and Ian felt that Samuel had the "It" factor. He was the winner of 'The Glee Project." Just as Damian was about to make a gracious concession speech, Ryan told him that he had also won.
Ryan awarded both Samuel and Damian seven-episode arcs on "Glee." Just when viewers were beginning to wonder if it was Christmas morning, Ryan informed runners-up Lindsay and Alex that they would be featured on two episodes.
For a show that prides itself on "diversity," it seems fitting it would choose four winners who represent very different demographics.
As Lindsay remarked, "did we all just win 'The Glee Project,' sort of?"
