What is a health spa?

Health spas come in a variety of names. They can be referred to as a wellness spa, a natural health spa or even a beauty spa. The basic premises are still the same though. The spa is a place where people go for certain services such as massages, body scrubs, cosmetic treatments and even hair cuts.

Health spas can be in casinos, resorts or even in your local strip mall. There is a good chance that there is at least one in your town.

My doctor recommended I go to a health spa for my aching muscles and back, will this really help?

Yes, actually it will help you. Health spas are not meant to repair broken discs or such but are excellent places to help you relax. A massage can help loosen tight muscles and the use of aromatherapy oils can help with your emotional state of mind.

Keep in mind that if you do have damage to your spine or back, it is very important to tell the massage therapist. The goal is to help you, not hurt you further.

Can I get my hair and nails done at the spa?

Most spas offer beauty treatments though each spa may differ in what is offered. Luxury spas at resorts, hotels or casinos will be more likely to offer anything from haircuts on to cosmetic procedures such as micro-derm abrasion. If you find a health spa you wish to visit, ask about their spa services to see what they have to offer.

What are the different massages?

There are hundreds of different variations on massages. Most spas will offer a few of the more popular choices. These choices could be Shiatsu, deep-tissue or aromatherapy. Some massages are based on principles of energy or Chi while others may use hot stones or essential oils.

Should I tip the attendants and workers at a health spa?

Whether or not you tip an attendant, worker, stylist or masseuse is entirely up to you. Many spas calculate in gratuity for larger parties, the same way a restaurant may, but if you are in doubt you can always offer a reward to the person for their exceptional service.
