Evian Roller Babies Ad Draws Mixed Reviews

Cute or Creepy?

Tina Molly Lang
Evian's latest ad features babies on roller skates moving to the music of "Rapper's Delight." The ad is roughly one minute long. It begins with a cutesy pink screen and a voice over instructing the viewer to "listen to the effects of Evian on your body." One baby pushes the play button on the stereo to begin "Rapper's Delight."

The babies perform various moves and tricks on their skates. While you may be wondering what you are supposed to glean from this ad, the pink screen returns to say, "Naturally pure and balanced mineral water supports your body's youth." The rollers babies, in matching white body suits, perform a few more moves before the final white screen and Evian logo. The voice over instructs you to "live young, live young."

Evian Roller Babies Ad: Mixed Reactions

Upon first viewing on YouTube, my reaction was puzzled amusement. Apparently other users are ambivalent as well. Germain Lussier of Twirlit admits that the Evian ad is entertaining, but points out that the computer animation is not of the most professional quality. It "ends up looking more like a baby roller skating video game on X-Box 360."

Ericadegarmo exclaims, "This is adorable. I can't stand it!!" Silverine02 remarks, "Uy! Cute, but at the same time kinda creepy" Atworkguy's sentiments are closer to my own, as he writes, "creepy or funny ... I cannot decide."

Evian is own by the Danone Group, a French multinational company. Evian water comes from several sources on the south Lake Geneva area. The company entered the U.S. market in 1978, serving high-end restaurants. Evian is typcially marketed as a high-end bottled water brand.

Evian Roller Babies Ad: Babies and Television

Evian Roller Babies are eerily reminiscent of the etrade babies. There are several ads of etrade babies, singing, golfing, and even being spanked. In one memorable ad, the etrade baby explains that he is renting a clown, pausing to say that he really underestimated the creepiness. While it's a bit creepy to see a baby with an adult voice talking about micromanaging and being born to trade, these etrade ads are certainly memorable.

Precocious babies (real or animated) have always been a source of entertainment. The 1989 film "Look Who's Talking" relatively successful during its theater run and inspired a spin-off TV series "Baby Talk" with Tony Danza narrating the thoughts of the baby.

From the roller babies ad, it seems that drinking Evian will make older people feel young while causing babies to turn into hip-hop dancers.
