Evil Queens: A Royal Battle Royale Between Charlize Theron and Julia Roberts

Charlize Theron and Julia Roberts will be playing the Evil Queen in two different Snow White movies. So who will be the vilest in all the land? Here the actresses face off to determine who will make the best Evil Queen:

Charlize Theron in "Snow White and the Huntsman"

It looks like the Evil Queen's character will be more developed in "Snow White and the Huntsman" than it was in Disney's animated version of the fairytale. Charlize Theron's character won't just rely on good genes to stay the fairest in the land as long as possible; her Evil Queen will be collecting as many beautiful women as possible, draining their essence and making them age as she does so. She also has an army that the seven dwarves reportedly must do battle with in part of the film, and it looks like Kristen Stewart might make the best Snow White; like Bella, this version of the fairytale princess will have two loves: Prince Charming and the huntsman that saves her.

So what experience does Charlize Theron have playing an evil character? Well, she did a decent job getting in touch with her darker side as an assassin in the action-packed "Aeon Flux" and she was definitely scary as a serial killer in "Monster" with all that makeup, but it will be interesting to see if the actress can pull off being as mean as the Evil Queen (she does have an Oscar for her acting ability). Oh yeah, she also has experience with seeing entities in mirrors, as shown in "The Devil's Advocate".

Julia Roberts in "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White"

In this version of the "Snow White" story, Julia Robert's Evil Queen kills Snow White's father and destroys the kingdom, so Snow White teams up with a gang of dwarfs to reclaim her crown. This one is described as a modern tale full of adventure and comedy, so it might not be quite as dark as "Snow White and the Huntsman".

So has Julia Roberts ever been so evil? Well, while I would describe some of the roles of one of America's many sweethearts as horrifying (think "Eat Pray Love") and while she's played a lawyer more than once, it's impossible to find any movies where Julia Roberts truly plays the bad guy. I mean, she is kind of mean to Cameron Diaz' character in "My Best Friend's Wedding", but she's definitely no cold-blooded killer. However, she does have experience starring in a fairytale movie; she played an adorable version of Tinkerbell in "Hook". Plus her good-girl past might make her a more intriguing Evil Queen, as she gets in touch with a dark side that her fans have never seen before.

So I would say I'm more looking forward to the movie "Snow White and the Huntsman", but I'm more intrigued by Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until 2012 to see the Evil Queens face off, and there might even be another one competing to be the fairest in the land by then; Disney is also planning a kung-fu version of Snow White called "Snow and the Seven" where the princess meets seven warriors in China (so it's like "Snow White" meets "Seven Samarui").

Sure it's a lot of different versions of the same tale, but I for one am excited to see this fairytale getting so many makeovers. So here's to hoping that this trend continues with more of Disney's princesses and villainous vixens.
