E-Waste: How to Cash in on Old Cell Phones

Kerry Mulherin
E-Waste is hazardous to our environment, but most people do not know they can generate a stream of cash from old used cell phones. I believe that knowing this will prevent people from dumping them where they are not wanted, and they in turn will spread the word which will inspire a brand new viral environmental cleanup effort.

Let's face it, cash is king. This could well be the answer to making people take more care. With the increasing amount of new gadgets available to consumers, many upgrade quite regularly leaving the corpses of yesterday's technology lying idle in the cupboard. An ever growing mountain of unused yet still fully functional electronics are being sent to landfill, and since most electronics contain components which render them toxic if disposed of incorrectly, it is necessary to research your options carefully before disposing of such equipment.

If you recently changed your cellphone plan only to be told you now need a new phone to use it, you're not alone. Millions of consumers everyday are faced with this very same dilemma. Some know where to send their cellphones for recycling, others have no clue, or a service is not locally available to them. So what can you do to avoid having boxes full of deceased cellphones in your closet?

Donate Your Cell phone:

Not only can you sell your cellphone, but you can also donate it to the 911 Cell phone bank. Simply request a free mailing label to send your phone and it will be placed with an organization who needs it. More information is following.

Sell For Cash:

As for the cash factor, simply navigate to the applicable page within the website listed at the foot of this article, select the make and model of the cellphone you wish to cash in, complete basic some info and click the button, it's that simple. Your phone must be in working order, be complete with battery and charger, along with any other accessories you may have.

Get Credit On Your Next Cell phone Purchase:

There is still one more option to consider. You can get $20 in coupon form for any cell phone, rather than taking the cash route. The coupon can be redeemed on the purchase of your next phone by visiting replacementphones.com. Your new phone must be a $75 or higher purchase price to use your coupon. With the price of cellphones these days a new phone with a price over $75 will certainly not be hard to locate.

So, next time you see a friend with a new cellphone, ask them if they knew they could cash in their old one, whether or not they'd like to donate it, or give it to you. Perhaps you could set up a drop off point for these 'dead' electronics in your area if one is not currently available. You may just make a bundle on a new great idea you were not even aware existed until now.

This is excellent advice, it is better to donate or sell the phone than to just toss it.
