v.6-7 - 1. God has determined to call sinners to repentance only through this Gospel.
v.8-9 - 2. God has determined every so-called new "gospel" is false.
v.10 - 3. God is pleased by the preaching of this Gospel alone.
v.10 - For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
-For do I now persuade men, or God?
Paul is asking a rhetorical question in which he's about to answer. He's asking, "Do I seek man's approval or God's?" The apostle Paul wasn't after being liked by men.
NOTE: Church, we can learn so much from Paul! We must constantly remind ourselves that our strength isn't in getting the world to like us, but our strength is in the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST! Jesus said in Luke 6:26, "Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets." There seems to be this mentality that if people like us, then they'll like Jesus. The reality is that they'll only like us. People can't be impressed with us and Jesus at the same time. We must therefore decrease; and He will then increase!
This mentality is further seen in the type of pastors churches are looking for. Instead of looking for men who preach the truth of God, churches have the "handsome quarterback" mentality. They want a man with great speaking ability and a dynamic personality. These are two requirements that the Bible doesn't require. We must care about what God cares about!
-or do I seek to please men?
Paul wasn't after pleasing men. After all, the Gospel is offensive! We have to tell people the bad news first: They're sinners, and they can't save themselves; that they're so bad that the sinless God in the flesh had to die in their places, taking their penalty, and giving them His good works. The bad news is indeed bad, but the good news is far greater!
-for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
But, if the apostle Paul started seeking man's approval now, he would cease to be the slave of Christ. The Gospel is "good news" for those who repent; but, it's also "bad news" because people are sinners.
-Conclusion:
In conclusion, there is only One Gospel of Jesus Christ. And this same Gospel not only saves you at the beginning, but also saves you in the present, and will surely save you in the end.
