Benefits and Challenges of Working from Home

Laurie Childree
Working from home has challenges and benefits associated with it that are not present when working at a traditional job. The majority of people seem to believe that going to work means getting up, dressing and leaving the home. This is not always the case, there are those that feel the freedom of being able to work in their pajamas if they choose. It's possible to make a living without ever leaving the comfort of your home.

Freelance writing is one such career that can be done from home online. While those without a fax machine may have to make the occasional trip to send a fax, the majority of the work is done from home. This presents a number of challenges for those that work from home, among them the doubt that they actually work because they don't have to leave the house.

The biggest challenge of working from home is getting people around you to accept that you do actually work. Ignoring the snide remarks is best at least until you can show them that you make what you need without the stress they endure from day to day. The benefits of working from home out weight the difficulties for most people that choose to do so.

Looking At The Benefits

The benefits of working at home have to be looked at before we get into the challenges. Saving money is the biggest advantage of working from home! There is no need to spend money on special clothing, jewelry, shoes, make-up or transportation when you can walk a few feet to your desk.

A large benefit of working from home is that you can not be late for work. It is an impossibility to be late when you leave the world of the punching a time clock behind. Sleeping in is something that those in the traditional work force can only do on their days off. When you work from home you have the benefit of being able to set your own schedule. This means that you decide if you're actually a morning or a night person; there are some people that actually become more productive as the rest of the world sleeps.

Those working from home can take a vacation whenever they choose to instead of waiting for vacation time to build up. The income goals that those working from home set for themselves are obtainable without anyone standing over their shoulder. There is no need for over time since those working at home set their own hourly rate by dedicating themselves to the job.

Challenges/Drawbacks Of Working From Home

Working from home posses a problem when those around you refuse to acknowledge that you actually work. There will be times when you will have to repeat yourself in order to get people to understand what you do. Questions are going to be a daily part of life until those around you get used to what you do.

There will be some people that have a tendency to attempt and take advantage of the fact that you are home all day. There is no need for you to say "yes" to every little request. When it comes to working from home the ability to tell people "no" will be one of your biggest assets. Running errands has to be done unless somehow you have managed to have everything delivered and pay everything from the comfort of your desk. Weekly errands do not have to interrupt your normal work schedule but if you have a lot of people asking you to do them favors because in their minds you do not work then you could end up losing a lot of precious time.

Those that are truly dedicated to leaving the world of traditional jobs and careers behind will tell anyone that they'd do it all over again. There is nothing more satisfying than leaving the boss in the office and taking charge of your own life.
