Excessive Underarm Sweating- Botox Treatment

Stephanie J. Graham
Sweating is a normal human process. However, it is estimated that 2-3% of Americans suffer from excessive underarm sweating or axillary hyperhidrosis. Excessive sweating of the underarms can make everyday activities a challenge for those who suffer from it and can diminish their self-esteem. They are unable to wear certain color clothing, avoid raising their hands, have to change their clothing often, and thus may sometimes find social settings to be uncomfortable. Botox treatments are one of the many options that can be used to reduce excessive sweating of the armpits. What do these Botox treatments involve and how can it suppress severe sweating? Are there any risk factors that need to be taken into consideration?

The Botox Procedure

Botox Treatment of the underarm is a very fast (10-15 minutes) and minimally painful procedure. The doctor will use the same Botox treatment used to reduce signs of wrinkles. Fifty units of Botox injected into 20 sections of your armpits will last approximately 6 months. The doctor will determine the exact amount of shots you will need according to the severity of your case. This procedure will have to be done every 6 months if you want the drug to take continuous effect since this is merely a temporary solution.

How Does it Stop Excessive Sweating

How does Botox reduce underarm sweating? Underarm sweating is controlled by the hypothalamus (small- cone shaped structure in the brain that controls the nerves that regulate body temperature). The doctor will inject a small needle into the nerves located in the underarm. The drugs contained in the Botox treatment will send signals to the nerves to temporarily put a stop to the production of sweat in the underarms.

Botox Injections-the Risks

Botox injections are not for everyone. As with any treatment it is wise to discuss with a doctor the side effects of using Botox to stop excessive sweating of the underarms. Using this method to treat severe sweating should be a last resort because of the possible risk factors. Some of these side effects include, trouble swallowing and breathing, seeing dual images, fuzzy images, loss of strength in the muscles, inability to control the bladder, difficulty speaking, headache, neck soreness; bad reactions such as itching, rash, wheezing, and asthma- like response.

It is best to be open and honest with your doctor when discussing the option of Botox for treatment of excessive underarm sweat. Tell your doctor if you are taking any form of drugs or supplements as they could cause a bad reaction to the treatment. In addition, talk about any medical issues that you may have so that you can avoid complications.

Botox treatment for excessive sweating of the underarm can be an effective method to temporarily stop severe sweating cases. Understanding the procedures and risks involved can help in determining if Botox injections are right for you. Also, speaking frankly with your doctor will further determine if you are able to take the risk.
