Exciting Movie and Film Events in Cleveland, Ohio Are There if You Know Where to Look
A Great Venue in Cleveland to View Excellent Films is Easy at the Capitol Theater
What the Capitol Theater offers is a real live working piece of cinema history. The structure itself is beautifully done inside and it feels distinctly retro and old school, which is interesting because the inner workings are nothing but modern and high tech. The movies are shown in digital format both 2d and 3 D.
What they have put together here is pretty much a year round film festival, and they have an offering for almost everyone. For example the film I went there to see was the Maltese Falcon, and I will be honest it blew me away to see such a fantastic classic film in this kind of venue. I have never seen this film on anything but our television at home, and I was amazed at the difference. This will definitely be a regular stop for future classic film viewings.
Many of the more interesting film and movie events are held at these smaller independent movie houses which are not affiliated with the large chain cinemas that have become so prevalent over the last 25 or 30 years. Instead these small businesses survive and often thrive by making a strong impact in the communities they are in.
Most are situated in the center of a near west side Art District with distinct bohemian theme to the surrounding community. There are unfortunately only a few of these retro venues left, but there has been a resurgence of these arts style houses lately here in the Cleveland area, and the ones that survive are at the head of the local film front.
Gordon Square Arts District offers a plethora of entertainment choices. A key venue in this vibrant arts community is the recently renovated Capitol Theater located at the corner of West 65th street and Detroit Avenue. This is now a state of the art 2D and 3D digital cinema which was first opened way back in 1921. This classic venue was closed for about 20 years and after extensive remodeling was re-opened in 2009. The timing could not have been better as it coincides with a rejuvenation of the entire Gordon Square neighborhood which includes many restaurants and clubs, total of three theaters are there all within a few minutes of each other, plus many other new businesses.
The real attraction here is the on-going list of film events that should keep us coming back for more. One of the recurring events that they have which I enjoy the most is their Sunday morning film showings. Recently I went to see the film classic "the Maltese Falcon" on Sunday at 10 am, and I have to say in this particular theater this classic old movie never looked better.
The seating is very comfortable, and the amenities are more that what you might see at the more modern cinema venues. Concessions are fairly standard like any theater, however the Capitol Theater also sells beer and wine. This comes in handy when you may be out on a Saturday evening and want to have a fun and pleasant night out in a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The theater runs all kinds of other events and specials such as their $5 Bargain Mondays, and Wednesday happy hour 4 to 8 pm half priced beer and wine.
What I found exceptional was the friendly atmosphere and the way everyone seemed to feel at ease even with strangers all around. This is the kind of neighborhood theater that some of us remember from back when we were kids and you could walk to the cinema and not have to worry about anything bad happening. Whatever their guiding principles are here at this special theater they seem to be on the right track if you ask me.
Of course they show feature films, and independents as well, and these show times can be located at the Cleveland Cinema website. Upcoming films for their Sunday program are the classics: All About Eve, followed by: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
