Exclusive Interview with Justin Davis from "Tha SportsKrib"
Justin Davis AKA JersyMikeJr. From Charlotte Sports Radio
Mr. Davis and his father are well known in the Charlotte North Carolina sports radio community. Known as Jersey Mike Sr. and Jr. they call WFNZ and SportsYapp often. They know their sports and can be entertaining as well as share that knowledge. Even though Chris McClain busts on Jersey Mike Sr. over his love of Rutgers, he is a liked and respected caller. More on Chris McClain can be found here, from an interview I did of him.
I split my time between WFNZ which I consider the best sports radio in Charlotte, and SportsYapp. I listen to these two while I am work because I have a job that allows me to listen to the radio. As you can read here I like SportsYapp more and more each day.
As a sports writer I like to get my sports fix from various places when I am online. "Tha Sportskrib" will be one of my new resources for sports talk. Without further adieu here is my interview with Justin Davis. of "Tha SportsKrib."
.
RI-You and your dad are well known sports fans in the Charlotte area. How much of your love for sports came from him?
JD-Well my dad is very much the reason I am the sports fanatic that I am today. As a boy he took me to ball parks, sandlots to catch and play baseball and was even a coach on my Pop Warner Football team. Being a Yankee sports is very important to my dad and New Jersey has a rich tradition. At least twice a week I call him and we talk and he calls into "Tha Sportskrib very regularly which airs at 9pm on BlogTalkRadio.
RI-You write about sports and co-host a sports radio show. Which do you enjoy doing more?
JD-If you forced me to choose one, I'd have to say writing. I'm not exactly the most eloquent person in the world and I have always been a better writer than talker. Strange, but true.
RI-What are your goals in the sports reporting field? Your dream job so to speak involving sports.
JD-Well it's funny if you asked me that three years ago, I would have told you that joining Stuart Scott on the set of ESPN SportsCenter was my dream job. Now it's more complicated. Having my own global sports website where I contribute but have hundreds of writers nationwide for starters. Then having a radio show in the afternoon, and a gig in the evenings, plus guest appearances. I want it all Randy. I want the WORLD!!!!! (Laughs hysterically)
RI-I know you are a big boxing fan and I ask this question to boxing fans all the time. Who would win a match between Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali if both were in their prime?
JD-My goodness if I got a dime for the times I was asked that, we'd be popping Dom P in crystal clear glasses and smoking Cubans with gold cutters (Laughs more hysterically)! In their primes it's no contest. Ali would bust up Tyson with the jab, cross his right over Tysons low guard and knock him out in the 8th round or sooner. Tyson would jolt Ali, but alot of people forget how well Ali could absorb punishment. His determination and will to win were second to none. Plus he's faster than Tyson could ever dream of being.
RI-If you could only watch one sport which would it be?
JD-Hands down. College Football!
RI-How does a guy known as JersyMikeJr. Get to be an Alabama fan?
JD-Okay JersyMikeJr is just a radio moniker to associate myself with my dad. He started calling in to radio stations locally as Jersey Mike for 3 years and then I joined him. I figured he needed a legacy and I needed an identity. Thats one reason why I spell it differently to create my own identity, but I'm still Junior.
I became an Alabama fan in 1993 when Alabama defeated the Miami Hurricanes to win the Sugar Bowl. George Teague chasing down Lamar Thomas is forever engraved in my memory. Everyone that I knew had jumped on the Hurricane bandwagon, so me being the controversial guy that I am jumped on Alabama the underdog and I haven't looked back since. I stayed through the probations, lived the triumph of the 1999 SEC winning year and the let down that followed. I thought Shula was good, but Saban is better.
RI-Do you think there will be either a lockout or strike in the NFL in 2011?
JD-I'm sorry Randy, but the particulars on the details of the Collective Bargaining Agreement escape me. The way Jerry Richardson of the Panthers is acting, it doesn't look good.
RI-What can listeners of "Tha Sportskrib" expect to hear when they tune in?
JD-You will get true Yin and Yang from myself and my host James King III out of San Diego, Cali. I'm more laid back and calm and he's the instigator and antagonist. We have a baseball correspondent and a MMA correspondent. We feature guests who bring knowledge about respective areas and topics. Whatever you ant it's there. We provide a pub or tavern like atmosphere. We are very young so we don't have a sponsor yet, but we're working on it! I don't know much about the merits of either boxer, but I'd also choose Ali over Tyson.
